The same study highlighted that new ways are emerging in Veneto wine district of both investment and specialization labor that demonstrate integration between businesses, local roots and it expresses the value of incorporating product 

identity as an integral part of competitive advantage. The research has pointed out the processes that lead to an increase of the size of firms, a change of ownership, for a possible establishment of groups to build an extensive network on lands that covers more provinces and reaches markets international.

Since 2000, firmas Veneto strategies consist in: 1) process of merger / acquisition / incorporation of firms, 2) integration division of production processes and marketing, 3) elaboration of more complex company strategies. 

These strategies lead, on the one hand, to a consolidation of rural development and, on the other hand, an increase of the importance of large retailers in the wine distribution.

The analysis of the business structure of the Veneto wine district examines only part of the overall value chain considering production of grapes to generate wine bottled excluding the retail sector of intermediaries engaged in transfer of goods from producer to consumer.

The production system, as the data analysis points out, is highly fragmented, the average age is low, the presence of firms with simple structures remains very high and, considering the entire production , there is a clear prevalence of producers than the bottler. The number of wineries registered with the Chambers of Commerce results in 2008 amounted to 13.661, of which 99% active.

The amount of local units is somehow higher (14.231), but there is a slight growth of the joint local firms in multiple locations. In terms of changes in the period 2005-2008 is observed as the structure of production has remained very fragmented, even if it is occurring a steady and gradual process of concentration observed by a decrease of 6,1% of the amount of enterprises.

In fact, in the wine industry the trend of consolidation continues as in the period 2000-2005 where the reduction of number of firms was even greater than the 11%. This suggests that there are still in place market pressures (both domestic and international) that lead companies to a continuous and constant restructuring.


Looking at the evolution of regional development in the number of firms from birth to now, 64% of businesses are born during the Nineties, resulting in a significant generational change and a partial modernization of the production structure of the industry.
