等;英语中的ten, twenty, hundred, thousand, a hundred and one, a thousand and one , million, billion等也可用作模糊数,泛指“多”义,如:
He has warned me against pickpocket twenty times.
I have a thousand and one things to do before we set out for our holiday.
许多语言中都有大量的模糊限制语(hedge),如汉语中的“大约﹑左右﹑也许﹑大概﹑说不定﹑若干﹑诸如此类﹑似乎”等;英语中的about, probably, many, sort of, kind of, more or less, roughly, somewhat, mostly, basically, almost, in a sense, commonly, relatively等。
如kind of, really, almost, entirely, to some extent.
指给话题限定某种范围的模糊限制语,如in most respects, par excellence, strictly speaking, loosely speaking, nominally, essentially, roughly, about …
指那些在数量上给出一个大致范围或近似值的模糊限制语,如more or less, approximately, most, something between … and …, around 等等。
I think perhaps you should …, if you don’t mind …, according to the doctor …, so far as I know …, as might, I was wondering …, it is said …,等。
You’re not exactly thrifty, if you see what I mean.
--After a period of quiet, violence reignited in late February, following the firebombing of two Christian homes. (Asiaweek, March 12, 1999)
--Democrats endorsed the Cox report --- though, so far, few specifics have been made public. And while much of the theft of military secrets allegedly took place long before Clinton’s presidency, he has ordered an assessment of possible damage to U.S. national security. (Asiaweek, Feb.26, 1999)
--At least 35 people perished last week when a truck erupted in flames deep inside the Mont Blanc tunnel that links France and Italy. The fire quickly engulfed some 30 other vehicles and burned for two days before firefighters finally put it out. (Newsweek, April 5, 1999)
-- Israeli forces say they killed at least 100 Palestinians and captured nearly 700 others, including some on Israel’s list of terror suspects. Dozens of civilians perished, some crushed by falling walls, others in the cross fire.(Time, May 6, 2002)
--Sporadic sniper fire and several rounds of artillery shells pounded the centre of the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo yesterday while the latest UN peace talks were about to start in New York.
Sarajevo reporters said artillery shells sla
