Chapter 1 Introduction

Projection, in this thesis, is used to cover the traditional term ‘reported speech’, ‘speech andthought representation’, ‘in/direct speech’ and other similar terms. Thus, the projection clause inthis research is adopted within the level of speech and thought representation based on the abovemention. Following Halliday and Zeng Lei, “projection is concerned with such a type of languagephenomenon that does not function as a direct representation of non-linguistic experience but as arepresentation of a linguistic representation” (Zeng Lei, 2006:173). Projection plays a pertinent andindispensable role in the buildup of any human language (Jacobson 1985:96) and without projection,language would be fatally limited in its potential as a means of communication, as Coulmas (1986)and Voloshinov (1973) maintain. Projection has greatly broadened our understanding to thislanguage phenomenon. But grammatical approaches to describing projection are constrained bytheir focus on identifiable structures, and even functional study on projection by Halliday restrictsthe study to the logico-semantic relations between clauses and to the logical function with littleattention on studying projection in terms of the interpersonal function. Therefore, we shall try to usethe projection clause in this research which can be as one of realization structures withinSystemic-Functional Grammar (SFG) to analyze the three Metafunctions in news discourse (ND).

1.1 Background of research
The fields of speech and thought representation have seen large numbers of articles in recentyears, and so the appearance of another thesis requires some justification. The present thesis doesnot attempt to provide complete coverage of speech and thought representation. Rather it tries toargue for particular viewpoints which some publications have probed, and we will advance theminto deeper study. In that respect, it tries to stress the interaction between speech and thoughtrepresentation, and context they lie in.The review of literature shows that projection is a vague term which may cover direct andindirect speech, speech and thought representation, voices, and intertextuality. Projection (reports,ideas, and facts) as a clause type is used by Halliday (1994). Voloshinov (1973) and Bakhtin (1981,1984) treat language use as contextualized utterances, which are polyphonic or dialogic and inwhich different voices are incorporated. Over the past years, analyses of verbal interaction havesubstantially broadened our understanding of speech and thought representation.This research studies from the Systemic-Functional approach the language phenomenon ofprojection clause in English. For this purpose the theoretical framework of Systemic-FunctionalGrammar (SFG) will be adopted in analyzing projection clause. Therefore, it is essential to presenta brief overview of SFG relating to work. There is a multiplicity of views within SFG, and ourresearch will particularly resort to Michael Halliday’s works, as it forms the core of SFG.
