摘要:The significance of studying multimodality and doing multimodality discourse analysislies in its integration of language with other semiotic modes in the current social practices.

anexpression plays a specific role in the communicative power of a sign[3]. Modality cues areused in the creation of meaning, referred to as “motivated signs” in the vocabulary of socialsemiotics[4]. And “ any semiotic mode, even smell, can be conceived of as a loosecollection of individual signs, a kind of lexicon, or a stratified system of rules that allow alimited number of elements to generate an infinite number of messages”[5]although theprecise nature of those rules or conventions of use can be more or less specific[3].The generalized definition of modality as a unique semiotic system allows us to gobeyond superficial distinctions (such as media or format) to a more complex understanding ofhow a mode of expression affects the contextualized exchange of meaning(s). Norrishighlights this, stating “different communicative modes possess different materiality”[6].She attributes audible materiality to spoken language, despite its being neither visible norenduring, while gesture is visible, but also quite fleeting. Print is visible and enduring, as isphysical layout of objects.

2.2 Development of Multimodality Research
When we talk about the development of the Multimodal Discourse Analysis, we can’tignore the social semiotic approach. Social semiotics is concerned with “the way people usesemiotic ‘resources’ both to produce communicative artifacts and events and to interpretthem ... in the context of specific social situations and practices”[15](Van Leeuwen, 2005:preface). The multimodal social semiotic approach draws upon Michael Halliday’s (1978,1994 [1985]; Halliday and Matthiessen, 2004) systemic functional (SF) theory to provideframeworks for conceptualising the complex array of semiotic resources which are used tocreate meaning (e.g. language, visual imagery, gesture, sound, music, three dimensionalobjects and architecture) and detailed practices for analyzing the meaning arising from theintegrated use of those resources in communicative artifacts (i.e. texts) and events. The notion of ‘semiotic resource’ in multimodal social semiotics is critical. VanLeeuwen (2005: 3) explains “[i] it originated in the work of [Michael] Halliday who arguedthat the grammar of a language is not a code, not a set of rules for producing correct sentences, but a ‘resource for making meanings’ (1978: 192)”. Halliday (1994 [1985]) identifiesfour types of meaning potential, which he calls the metafunctions of language: (a) experientialmeaning for constructing experience; (b) logical meaning for establishing logical relations; (c)interpersonal meaning for enacting social relations; and (d) textual meaning for organizing themessage.[16]Halliday’s (1994 [1985]; Halliday and Matthiessen, 2004; Martin, 1992;Martin and Rose, 2003) SF theory provides a description of the metafunctional-basedphonological, grammatical and discourse systems which are used for the analysis of linguistictexts and events.
