A Study Report of Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience
Report summary
This report mainly summarizes the major principles of civil disobedience advocated by Henry David Thoreau, an American political scholar of the 19th century. By analyzing the main beliefs and impacts of this historical political view, the author intends to find out how this political philosophy has changed the political attitude of the latter generations. Two examples will be analyzed in details in this report. They are Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian nationalist leaders and Martin Luther King Jr, the political leader of the 1960’s civil rights movement in the 1960’s America.
1. Introduction
Literally, civil disobedience refers to the refusal to obey regulations issued by governments. In a broader sense, it can be understood as an endeavor to revolt against the dominating moral principles or social customs (Arthur, 1971. p. 397). In most occasions, it may be defined as nonviolent resistance against the government or an authority. Henry David Thoreau, the American political scholar, once wrote an essay, Civil Disobedience (which was originally titled Resistance to Civil Government), summarizes the major principles of civil disobedience and its significance in impacting social changes. The main content of the essay is that citizens of a society are morally responsible for the evolution of the conventional ideas, which is often supported by the legal regulations of a government (Cavallaro, 1993. p. 362). The oppression of the vast majority of a society is the root of the minorities (such as ethnic minorities and political minorities). In the essay, some concrete examples have been given by Thoreau to explain the just reason for citizens to refuse to cooperate with the government. These include the refusal to pay taxes to protest against war and slavery. To him, these refusals reflected the responsibility of a citizen to care about the fate of a state or a nation. In this report, the author intends to clarify the major principles derived from the study of Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience and analyses the influence of these principles in political practices. In order to explain this more concretely, the cases of Mohandas Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be cited in particular.

4. Conclusion
To summarize, the social belief advocated by Henry David Thoreau in his Civil Disobedience inspired the latter political life of the socially and politically unprivileged minority groups in the world. They found the philosophical origins of their just behavior and the foundation of human dignity and equality in Thoreau’s works. By exercising the principles of civil disobedience, people of latter days have to a large extent gained the inspiration of living an equal life (at least spiritually) with the main-stream culture of a society. From this perspective, the major principles of civil disobedience is a active inspiration of liberty to the whole h本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
