Focusing on return migration, this paper draws out the tensions between integration and transnationalism, flexibility and rootedness, and citizenship and nationalism. I argue that the recognition of transnationalism necessitates a conceptual re-examination of return migration. Substantively, the paper is based upon my research on the flow of skilled migration between Canada and the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Since 1998, China has been the top source country of skilled immigrants to Canada. In recent years, however, a counter-current has emerged with the return movement of PRC immigrants back to China. I examine how the cultural Politics of identity play out amongst PRC immigrants in Canada in light of this reverse migration. Drawing on focus groups and interviews, I suggest that not only the act of return, but its very discourse, has influenced the ways in which the politics of identity and belonging are evolving amongst PRC immigrants in Canada. Ultimately, hybridised forms of cultural identification become the norm for migrants whose homes are no longer tied to one place.

Introduction 介绍

When living in one culture, you always dream of another, more ideal one than your own. However, after you have experienced this other culture, your dreams of it are broken by a strange, new-found reality. Losing the comforts of your inherent culture, you wander back and forth between the two, not knowing which you belong to, unable to establish roots in either (Gu Xiong1 quoted in Zacharias 2003). In the summer of 2002, Haiwen, a recent immigrant in Vancouver, returned to China*not to his native Beijing, but instead to Shanghai*where, upon arrival, an Sin Yih Teo is Doctoral Candidate in Geography, University of British Columbia. Teo American company affiliated with his former employer recruited him. There was a geographical caveat to this apparently simple narrative of return: Vancouver was the ‘third space’ (Bhabha 1994) in a strategic career move involving physical relocation to avoid the complexities of workplace guanxi (human relationships) that would otherwise be implicated had Haiwen moved directly from Beijing to Shanghai. My intention here is not only to highlight the social embeddedness of immigration (Ley 2003) but, more fundamentally, to question the very meaning of migration in an age of rapid global flows. As such, I am more interested in how Haiwen’s return fits within a wider framework of migration than in the fact of his return per se. Similarly, this paper focuses on return migration to draw out the tensions between integration and transnationalism, between flexibility and rootedness, and between citizenship and nationalism. Firstly, I argue that the recognition of transnationalism necessitates a conceptual re-examination of return migration. Secondly, I consider both the structural contexts of migration and the cultural dynamics under论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
