Potts' detailed monograph provides an overview of the work of the Baptist Missionary Society in India with emphasis on the activities of the "Serampore Trio," including William Carey. Potts argues that missions should not be viewed as an accessory to empire, but as an enterprise driven by separate motivations. The book is based on archival sources, including East India Company Records and missionary society reports, and its sympathy towards its subjects provides a counterpoint to Hall's work. Hall, Catherine. Civilising Subjects: Metropole and Colony in the English Imagination. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2002. Civilising Subjects is a highly theoretical study of the power relationships between white English missionaries and black slaves who converted to Christianity in British Jamaica in the 1830s and 1840s. Drawing upon missionary language that viewed converts as "uncivilized," "other," and "heathen," Hall finds that Englishness itself had to be constructed through the colonial counter with the Other. The book paints the missionary project harshly, as an imperializing enterprise, and aligns with recent historiographical emphasis on Britishness on the imperial periphery.
