本文是一篇英语阅读论文,本研究基于图式理论和建构主义学习理论,将批判性阅读策略应用于高中英语阅读教学。通过问卷调查、测试和访谈发现,高中生对批判性阅读策略的了解和应用很少。

Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background

Society is evolving rapidly, information is being disseminated in diverse ways, the speed of communication is accelerating, and internet communication is becoming more and more convenient. For contemporary high school students, they have more and more ways to access information and the information they obtain is becoming more and more abundant. However, not all of this information is useful, and as high school students are at a stage of rapid physical and mental growth, they need to develop proper reading habits to filter information, distinguishing between valid and invalid information correctly in order to obtain what they need. Critical reading can help students to read correctly and efficiently. Therefore, it is so important for high school students to develop good critical reading habits nowadays.

In the current state of English teaching reading in Chinese high schools, critical reading is receiving insufficient emphasis. For a long time, reading has been highly valued by English teachers and scholars as one of the four skills of English learning, not only because reading comprehension occupies a large proportion of English exams, but also reading is the main way and source of information for students to know the culture of foreign countries. However, at present, reading teaching in most high schools remains in a superficial mode, with most teachers providing students with only declarative knowledge and rarely allowing them to explore the deeper meanings of texts, such as the structure of the text, the author’s intention, the tone of the writing and other deeper understandings. 

1.2 Research Purpose

Based on experimental research on senior high school English reading classrooms, this thesis elaborates on the specific application of critical reading strategies in senior high school English reading teaching, aiming to explore the frequency of use of critical reading strategies for senior high school students, and what impact the strategies can have on students’ English reading attitudes and English reading performance. Finally, some feasible suggestions are made for senior high school English reading teaching.

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Critical Reading

In this part, the author mainly expounds and summarizes the definition of critical reading and the study of critical reading at home and abroad. 

2.1.1 Definition of Critical Reading

(1) In Western countries, the study of critical reading has a long history from the Socratic era, but it was not until the 1970s that foreign scholars began to study critical reading systematically. Foreign scholars hold different views on the definition of critical reading.

Harris and Hodges (1981) first clearly summarize critical reading as reading to make one’s own judgement based on the text and then to give an appropriate evaluation of the relevant content in order to gain understanding. Peters (1991) states that critical reading refers briefly to the readers’ analysis and evaluation of the text they are reading.
