I am Gai Xiaodi, an undergraduate who has obtained the Bachelor of Arts this June from Shanghai International Studies University, one of the top 3 universities of foreign languages in China, with a major in English Language and Literature and a minor in Japanese. I am fascinated by teaching since I was a 7th grade student when a young and beautiful teacher from the town gave us a splendid English lecture. I was totally impressed by her perfect pronunciation, professional knowledge and above all her strong passion towards English teaching. At that moment, I determined to become one English teacher as her. In 2010, I obtained the Teacher’s Certificate of People’s Republic of China in, which is the passport for anyone wants to be a teacher in China.
As a student with high English language competence and a keen interest in teaching, I would like to pursue my study in the direction of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in University of Nebraska Kearney, which is best known for its commitment to academic excellence as mentioned by Chancellor Doug Kristensen.
In the undergraduate studies, I have studied courses closely related to Education, such as Psychology of Education and Teaching Methodology, which laid my theoretical foundation in the field of teaching. Additionally, I have had varied experiences related to teaching, which have strengthened my desire to further my study in TESOL.
In the summer vacation of 2008, I participated in a summer English camp for students in middle and primary schools administrated by Heihe, a city in Hei Longjiang province northeast China working as an English teaching volunteer. I taught ten fifth grade primary students English especially pronunciation. In order to make my class interesting and motivate students, I designed a lot games such as singing English songs and telling stories, which proved to be a great success. In the end of the program, I was awarded the title of Excellent English Teaching Volunteer among over hundreds of volunteers. In addition, I worked as an internship at Heihe No.1 Middle School from September to November in 2009. During the internship, I taught English especially speaking and listening to a class of senior one student.
In the two programs, I have not only applied the teaching methods I have learned at the university into practice but also strengthened my dedication to the profession of teaching. What makes teaching so enjoyable to me is that it is a learning experience for both students and teachers. I also helped students cope with their problems in daily lives, thereby gaining a further understanding of my students and having enjoyed a good time with them.
In my studies toward a master degree, I hope to explore and study more deeply teaching theories as well as teaching methodology through the selected program with the view of improving teaching competence on the whole. In terms of career, I would like to become a primary English teacher since children are the future of a country and it is of great significance for children to learn foreign language. As Anton Chekhov, a famous Russian writer once said: “For a cultivated man, to be ignorant of foreign languages is a great inconvenience.”
