Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background
Graffiti, the scribbling on the walls, desks, books, materials as well lids, the school grounds, buildings, lavatories, and even T-shirts, umbrellas, thermos, is a common social phenomenon. The related studies of graffiti (wall language) originate from the distant past and which has a history as long as two thousand years old. In the evolution process of graffiti, it never loses its appeal to the researchers who take particular liking into it. Generally speaking, the studies of graffiti take many forms, ranging from the perspective of philosophy, psychological, socio-psychology, socio-semiotics to linguistics, and so forth. The vast majority of graffiti studies focus on the topic whether graffiti as a form of 'art' or sheer vandalism. However, as most scholars in this field declares, also in the eyes of the author, graffiti should be considered as a form of discourse, genre and  conversation  to  achieve  the  same  effect  as  daily  conversations.  Actually,  graffiti  sometimes  have considerable meaning to convey when a message is clearly written. Some of them can be easily noticed and understood, even for the onlookers and others are too complicated for comprehending in terms of their style, format, or with a purpose that the onlooker cannot interpret, just showing their particular concern. Either way, graffiti conveys message. The author regarding the campus graffiti as a form of interaction for the graffitists to seek communication among their peers. And taking a step further, the author attempts to uncover how the graffitists  on  campus  resort  to  graffiti  to  communicate  and  to  construct  their  identities  through  graffiti contacting. To be clear, for the purposes of this thesis, graffiti will be considered as any writing, scribbles, pictures  appeared  on  any  campus  surface.  Moreover,  graffito  is  viewed  as  a  mode  of  interaction  to construction identity. Graffiti, as a form of 'written words', performing the same function as conversation in interaction, reflects the graffitists’ inner world and their desire to form an identity. Identity construction takes its root in constructionism, and the study of identity largely based on macro angle, such as demographic categories, temporary and interactionally specific stances and participant roles, and local, ethnographically emergent cultural positions (Mary Bucholtz and Kura Hall, 2005, p585). Moreover, Erikson (1968) holds that identity is the major task of psychosocial and most existing research in developmental psychology has conceptualized personal identity as an individual, “internalized” phenomenon.

1.2 Significance of the Present Study
The study of graffiti is a never-ending topic. Studies on graffiti are often conducted from the angle of sociology, and some are of very informative value to a much wider audience of educators, administrators, and  parents, psychologists.  The  previous  researches on  graffiti  frequently  choose  street,  subway,  public places as the main settings of data collection and analysis. However, fewer researchers surveyed the campus graffiti. As for 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
