Chapter 1 The Soil for Dylan’s individualism: Hibbing in the 1950s (1941-1961)

1.1  The Rise and Fall of Hibbing

Hibbing,  northern  Minnesota,  where  Dylan  grew  up,  owes  its  name  to  a Germany  business  man,  Frank  Hibbing,  who  first  discovered  the  Hull–Rust–Mahoning in 1892, the largest open pit iron mine in the world. Taking pride of the discovery  and  feeling  responsible  for  the  town  site  named  after  him,  Hibbing personally  financed  a  large  part  of  the  town’s  first  infrastructure  to  boost  its development, including “roads, water plant, electrical plant, hotel, saw mill, and bank building” (Sheehy & Swiss, 2009, p.26).  

The turn of the century witnessed a huge wave of European immigration. Over 2 million Orthodox Jews from Eastern Europe arrived in America between 1880 and 1920, among them were Dylan’s grandparents. Hibbing became the center of the “Mine Rush,” much like California Gold Rush 5 decades earlier, which attracted refugees and job seekers from home and abroad. As a result, the town’s population boomed within a decade from 325 to 2481 by 1900, and the number “more than tripled by the next census in 1910” (Ibid, p.26). Numerous institutions and clubs were founded to meet people’s need for education, entertainment, and religion accordingly.

1.2  The Lock and Keys: Early Constraints and Inspirations

1.2.1  When Home Is Not the Best

Robert  Shelton,  author  of  Dylan’s  biography  No  Direction  Home,  refers  to Hibbing  as  a  “Babbitt  country,  home  of  provincialism,  isolation,  backwater conservatism”  (Shelton,  2011,  p.51).  Hostile  as  these  cultural  problems were  for Dylan and many other young people who held big ambitions, they turned out to be the  touchstones  and  incentives  that  brought  out  one’s  individualism  in  a  reverse manner.  

Unwittingly  representing  Hibbing’s  decay  and  conservatism  was  his  parents who  tried  to  tie  up  and  cage  young  Dylan  with  their  worldly,  narrow  view  and oftentimes authoritarian parenting style. From 15 to 18, juvenile Dylan experienced a deteriorating relationship with his parents: disagreement at first, then estrangement, and finally an irrevocable breakdown, which was not uncommon in the context of the problematic parents-children relationship in the 1950s.
