CHAPTER ONE A DEPARTURE STATION FROM LONDON:MARGARET’S AWARENESS ABOUT THE SOCIALHARBINGER OF AN INCOMPLETE CONNECTION

1. The Incomplete Connection in the Civilization of Luggage

The concept of “rootlessness or displacement on earth” is viewed as a mainconcern in Howards End, in particular to novel’s subtle representation of the “nomadiccivilization” in London (Forster 272). The city is riddled with the sense of flux andturbulence haunted by “the grey tide”, uprooting people from their physical dwellings(Forster 112). In this case, the individuals are hard to find a sense of belonging and toconnect with a permanent place physically and spiritually, because they are confrontedwith the risk of being driven from one place to another place all the time. Regina Martinemphasizes that “it is the rapid rise and fall of urban architecture to which the novelmost interestingly attributes modern flux.” (449)

Margaret is not spared of the doom of the modern flux, and has to join the nomadicmovement. Her dwelling in Wickham Place is about to be razed, replaced by more luxurious and modern apartments. The newly-built houses are ready to accommodatemore people who have migrated from countryside into the city. Before the loss ofWickham Place, Margaret has no misgivings about the repercussions of the modernflux. But the moment she is informed to leave the house, Margaret starts to understandthe vital importance of making connection with a permanent house, which is rootedwith piles of memories and emotion. However, she has no choice but to cut theconnection with her home, and to join the nomadic horde foretasting the bitter fruit ofthe “civilization of luggage” where “the middle class accreted possessions withouttaking root in the earth”, and “may find in this the secret of their imaginative poverty”(Forster 156). In other words, Margaret is to be besieged by the civilization in whichindividuals are disconnected with the earth, accompanied with their impairedimagination and emotion.

2. The Incomplete Connection on the Money-piled Island and the Spiritual Wasteland

“The very soul of the world is economic, and that the lowest abyss is not theabsence of love but the absence of coin.” (Forster 63) Money governs the running mode of the world, and the characters in the novel are living on the island of money. “Thenovel uses money as an iterative motif and a plot—motivator. Money is at the core ofthe novel.” (Wright 47) In order to accumulate more wealth, the English people areconverted to make foreign investments. Undoubtedly, Margaret follows the crowd, hence putting a large amount of money on “foreign things”. Copious studies on thenovel are inclined to categorize the Wilcoxes and the Schlegels as opposites, who sharediscrepant beliefs and values. However, both shape their outlook based on theirfinancial condition. Speaking of the importance of money, Margaret believes thatmoney is “the warp of civilization”, and personal relation would be its woof (Forster133). She explicates to Mrs. Munt, “You and I and the Wilcoxes stand upon money asupon islands…most others are down below the surface of the sea.” (Forster 63) HowbeitMargaret is an intellectual riveting her interest upo论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
