China’s rapid economic growth over the past few decades has given people theconfidence to make greater contributions to the global progress and the desire to seemore presence of the Chinese culture on the world stage. The belt and road initiationhas been positively responded by more and more nations along the silk roads, causingthe Chinese culture to travel far and wide. This has created some demand for translatedChinese books, especially classics. Against this background, Chinese translators beginto shift their attention from translating foreign books into Chinese to translatingChinese books into other languages, and among them the most active areChinese-English translators. Increased translation activities have aroused more interestin translation theories and translation strategy studies.

The translation theory of frame operation rose in the seventies of the last centuryas a fruit of interdisciplinary studies between cognitive psychology andpsycholinguistics. The technical term “frame” is borrowed from artificial intelligence.The theory was introduced into China in recent years. A PhD dissertation and a coupleof MA theses can be seen published on the CNKI, studying the translation of differentChinese classics from the perspective of frame operation theory. Many scholars,especially those from the Southwest University, are now busy applying the theory totranslation studies of various Chinese classics ranging from ancient poems tophilosophical works. This thesis project is part of the new academic trend, of which thepurpose is to testify how frame operations are manipulated in the translation of aChinese classic work by the three translators and how frame operation has influenced the choice of translation strategies which are the externalization of the frame operationand thus to infer indirectly that it is feasible for the operation theory to the translationof Tao Teh Ching .

1.2 Research Questions and Significance

This project sets out to answer three research questions: (1) What kinds of frameoperations do three translators manipulate while translating Lao Tzu’s Tao Teh Ching,which is rich in Chinese culture? (2) What are the possible causes behind thesedifferent frame operations done by the three translators? (3) How has frame operationinfluenced the choice of translation strategies of Tao Teh Ching?

There are two major significances of the research project. Theoretically, thevalidity of the frame theory has been attested to culture rich work. Many people doubtthe translatability of such a profound, philosophical work like Tao Teh Ching by LaoTzu, considering the book’s suggestiveness and the enormous amount of culturalinformation lying behind the terse language. The cognitive theory of frame operationoffers a new approach which shifts our attention from surface language expressions tothe depth of human consciousness. If Xiao’s (2012) theoretical model of frameoperation is applied to a highly culture-specific, ancient, Chinese work like Tao TehChing, any discoveries made will be a contribution to the formulation and expansion ofthe frame theory.
