2.1Introduction of basic concepts

This section introduces conjunction, corpus and corpus linguistics. Conjunction is theresearch object of the study, so its definition, classification and function are presented. As thestudy takes the corpus-based method, therefore, an introduction on corpus and corpuslinguistics is shown as well.

2.1.1 Conjunctions

In this part, the definition, classification and function of conjunctions are listed.

2.1.1.1 Definition of conjunction

There are different names for conjunction. Halliday and Hasan (1976), Halliday (2000)and Sinclair (2005) used “conjunction”, Quirk et al. (1985) used “conjuncts”, Zhao Weibin(2003) used “connector”, and Mo Junhua (2005) used “connective”. This thesis is based onHalliday and Hasan’s Cohesion Theory, therefore, “conjunction” is used.

Halliday and Hasan (1976) defined conjunctions as the words and phrases that canclearly express the interrelationships of two propositions or clauses in one discourse; Quirk etal (1985) thought that conjunctions are words or phrases which can unite two language unitstogether (Li Xiaoxia, 2020). According to Mo Junhua (2005), conjunction is a cohesive devicethat expresses the logical or semantic relationships among units in a discourse.

2.2Theoretical basis

This part introduces theoretical basis of the study. Conjunction is a type of cohesion. Thisstudy mainly focuses on the collocations of conjunctions in writings. Therefore, CohesionTheory, Firth and Sinclair’s thought on collocation are mentioned together.

2.2.1 Cohesion theory

In 1976, the publication of Cohesion in English signaled the establishment of CohesionTheory. “The concept of cohesion is a semantic one; it refers to relations of meaning that existwithin the text, and that define it as a text…. Cohesion occurs where the interpretation ofsome element in the discourse is dependent on that of another. The one presupposes the other,in the sense that it cannot be effectively decoded except by recourse to it” (Halliday & Hasan,1976: 4).

When talking about cohesion, some concepts need to be known, including “text”,“texture” and “tie”. Text can be any spoken or written passage that forms a unified wholeinstead of a collection of unrelated sentences (Halliday & Hasan, 1976: 1). Texture means theproperty of being a text, and it helps distinguish something that is not a text (Halliday &Hasan, 1976: 2). As can be seen from the example proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976: 2),“Wash and core six cooking apples. Put them into a fireproof dish”, in which “them” means“six cooking apples”. Cohesion exists between two sentences, so the two sentences constitutea text. Texture is achieved by the cohesive relation between “six cooking apples” and “them”.Tie can be a single instance of cohesion, which represents the occurrence of a pair ofcohesively related items (Halliday & Hasan, 1976: 3). The relation between “six cookingapples” and “them” is a tie.
