The South Korean scholar Moon (2016) suggests that there should be a new form of identity for the young generation of American Indians according to Junior’s experience of becoming a nomad, which is his resolution of balancing his Indian identity with the white American identity. She also argues that being a nomad to obtain hope is not simply leaving the reservation but, like Junior, keeping his home in mind and heading to a better future.

Chapter Two  Neurotic Symptoms in Junior and Rowdy’s Human Relationships

2.1 Junior’s Moves Toward, Against, and away from People

The neurotic, who moves toward others and chooses the self-effacing solution to his inner conflicts, longs for “help, protection, and surrendering love” (Horney, 1951: 215). In Junior’s case, both love and protection are what he needs urgently. Junior lives in a world where he always gets bullied by others and therefore has no confidence in himself and the majority of people around him. Instead, he gets anxiety and a disturbance in his relation to himself and others, which is his neurosis. In the early period of his neurotic development, love is crucial for him, and he mainly moves toward people to cope with them and allay his anxiety. He, however, also moves against and away from others in specific situations.

2.1.1 Junior’s Oppressive Move Toward People

Junior repeats what and whom he loves in his diary many times but does not directly express his needs for love from others except for the following picture (Picture 1), in which he is juggling three things—an electronic saw which is dangerous, a frightened rabbit, and a book with a title of “POEMS ABOUT PINE TREES”—and he says “LOVE ME” with exclamation marks three times to show his urgent need for love from others. The juggling game is used to entertain others to gain affection. And the three juggling balls are replaced by two odd things and one dangerous thing in that picture, the purpose of which is to get attention and love from others instead of what he receives in actual life—being frequently teased and roughed up. Therefore, this cartoon illustrates the importance of love for him.

2.2 Rowdy’s Moves Against and Toward People

Rowdy, Junior’s best friend on the reservation, suffers from the brutal treatment of his father and therefore has no confidence in himself and others. He feels that the world is hostile and believes that he has to be strong enough to protect himself. Considering his human relationships, Rowdy mostly moves against and rarely toward people, and yet he never moves away from others.

2.2.1 Rowdy’s Oppressive Move Against People

Rowdy has his first fistfight in kindergarten when he punches three first-graders and the teacher who tries to stop the fight. When the teacher yells at him to ask what is wrong with him, he yells back and answers, “Everything” (Alexie, 2009: 18). And he, at the age of fourteen, fights everything, even stray dogs and the weather—he throws “wild punches at rain” (Alexie, 2009: 18). He is, according to Junior, “strong like a snake,” and his heart is “as strong and mean as a snake” (Alexie, 2009: 15). He even moves against Junior, his best and only friend, before Junior’s transfer to Reardan High School. On the night at the powwow, he becomes mad because Junior laughs when he stumbles i论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
