The CEA framework is an efficient translation analysis system that focuses on describing the whole translation process. In CEA framework, comprehension refers to the correct understanding of the original text. “Comprehension is the key to translation, only with accurate and thorough comprehension can we express ourselves faithfully and fluently” (Liu, 2006: 31-32). Ke Ping also stresses that comprehension of the source text is the first step of the whole translation process and comprehension is the basis of translation (Ke, 1993: 46). As a complicated and critical step, accurate comprehension lays a solid foundation for expression.

4.1 Comprehension

“Comprehension is the basis of expression, one cannot express correctly without correct comprehension” (Xu, 2006: 1). According to relevance theory, lexical information, encyclopedic information and logical information are three distinct types of information stored in memory, which can help the author understand the ST. In the translation practice, the translator has met with various comprehension problems, typical problems are polysemous words, special terms and context.

4.1.1 Polysemous Words

Feng Qinghua stresses that polysemy is prevalent in English and Chinese. The same simple word or phrase may have different meanings in different contexts. Thus we need to rely on the specific context to determine the meaning of a certain word or phrase (Feng, 2010: 8). Besides, Huang Qiuxia points out that some words have multiple meanings, among which one meaning is more common in daily life (Huang, 2020). In the course of translation, for lack of experience, the translator misunderstood some polysemous words in the ST. In order to avoid this problem, the translator should go deeper into the context to comprehend the meaning of the words in the ST.
