本文是一篇商务英语论文题目,本文基于Byram提出的跨文化交际能力理论和Van Dyne等人提出的文化智力扩展模型。本文试图通过一个案例研究来探讨文化智商与跨文化交际能力之间的关系,其中130名外籍人士被要求回答一份问卷,其中4人被邀请进行半结构式访谈。

CHAPTER ONEINTRODUCTION

1.1 Research background

At present, economic globalization is still an irreversible trend. All countries in theworld are alike in the global production network. The global allocation of theindustrial chain is a natural selection process of market resource allocation, and it isalso governed by the law of global economic development. On the other hand, from adomestic perspective, China cannot develop in isolation from the rest of the world. Ithas been proposed by the Chinese government that although China’s economy isbased on the domestic cycle, it is bound to strive to achieve mutual promotion of thedomestic and international cycles. China has put forward the “Belt and RoadInitiative” and has conducted projects which have become a new promising model fordevelopment of economy with the combination of the output of infrastructure andproduction capacity at the supply side and the unimpeded channel of internationalcommodity circulation.

Correspondingly, Chinese enterprises, including M Company, have attempted to“go global” and actively expand overseas markets. Many companies have endeavoredto organize international marketing teams built from expatriates for overseas sales andsupporting services across the border. For expatriates, the cultural and businessenvironment of foreign countries, which are distinctly different from those in China,will greatly affect their intercultural communication process and results at their workand life there. And existing studies have proved that employees’ interculturalcommunication competence (ICC) has a bearing on such aspects as their workperformance, customer purchase intention and customer satisfaction, which would inturn affect the company’s overseas expansion.

1.2 Research purpose and significance

Against the research background, it has practical significance to conduct studies onthe influencing factors of expatriates’ ICC. The challenge for international businessprofessionals is being able to predict and understand cultural differences incross-border business activities and make adjustments accordingly (Carte & Fox,2008). Likewise, Shi (2015) has pointed out that, except for cultural cognition at alllevels, to secure successful intercultural business communication, an individual issupposed to know the way to coordinate macro-cultural differences, to effectivelymanage human resources, to learn and transfer knowledge in a multiculturalenvironment, to judge the power relationship between the interlocutors, and to caterhis communication methods and strategies to the specific communication situation.

In other words, in addition to the expertise in certain cultural knowledge,expatriates should make correct judgments and evaluations on cultural and businessdifferences in the context of intercultural business communication, and take appositepractices to cope with the differences and, by extension, to proceed fruitfulintercultural communication. Cultural intelligence (CQ) has been regarded by manyscholars as an effective predictor of cognitive, affective, and behavioral outcomes inintercultural contexts. Therefore, the thesis attempts to probe into the relationshipbetween CQ and ICC.
