非洲英语变体的研究 The study of African English variety
Chapter 1
Introduction
1.1 Background Information
English is now a truly global language. Such statement must have appeared in a highly frequency in various newspapers and magazines. English is the language of international communication in trade, science, diplomacy, technology and other fields. Wherever you travel, you will not be lost because there are full of English signs and people who speak English to some level of competence. More recently, revolutions in transport, commerce, Internet and satellite broadcasting have all further reinforced the global pre-eminence of English (Rubdy and Saraceni 2006: 5).
However, the widespread of English around the world inevitably result in an undeniable fact---the nativization of English. That is to say, English is transcreated by different users from different first language backgrounds and integrated with other languages and cultures of different speakers. The nativization in turn makes English become Englishes, which mean the different local forms of English and implies plurality of English (Pan 2005: 2). Nativized Englishes differ from the traditional inner-circle  English  in  terms  of  pronunciation,  vocabulary,  grammar,  meaning, discourse, register and style. Linguists named such Englishes as varieties of English or New Englishes. Besides, the literary works written in New Englishes are called New Literatures in English which were generally found in the English-speaking Caribbean and in countries where English is used as a non-native but indispensable auxiliary language (Yan 2003). African English literature is such a member in this big family.
From the 1960s, African literature gradually gets compelling grow-up. With the development of African literature, one issue concerning the literary language of African literature has been continually evoking furious debates among African writers and literary critics: If the languages used in African literature must be African ethical languages, or European languages, or the mixed kind? Some writers strongly disapprove of using European languages as African literary language. They stress that European languages, especially English, carry certain Western values and conventional prejudice to black culture and thus show racial discrimination.  They claim that using such European languages, which bear derogatory connotation to Black culture, as literary media will bring negative effect to African literature and African social political development. They argue that African literature should be the literature produced by African people in African languages.
On the contrary, however, some other writers hold an opposite view. They start from the history and current state of African continent and recognize that only ex-colonial languages can serve as communicational languages between different ethical groups in Africa because large numbers of unintelligible languages coexist in African countries. Therefore, only English works can enjoy the status 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
