1.1 Role of note-taking

According to Heping Liu, consecutive interpreting means “intelligently converting theinformation from the source language into the target language, after a thorough comprehensionof the message” (Liu, 2006: 25). In this sense, there are several steps which the interpreterfollows, to accurately represent the same meaning into a foreign language: listening, analysing,synthetizing, corelating with parallel knowledge, and rendering correctly in the target language.

All these steps have one feature in common: they all happen inside the brain - the mostpowerful tool of an interpreter. Nevertheless, human memory is limited and in such demandingtasks such as consecutive interpreting, it requires external assistance in order to maintainefficiency and accuracy. Therefore, note-taking is an indispensable tool for interpreters.

The main purpose of note-taking is that of providing an aid to the memory. It is a physicalauxiliary to the cognitive process, facilitating the access to information which is already storedin the memory, or which is easy to forget and needs visual representation. Liu Hui (2008: 110-114) categorizes the three main functions of note-taking as follows:

(1) Reduces the burden of the memory – The process of consecutive interpreting mainlyrelies on short-term memory, which is known to only last for several minutes. A longspeech can become a great burden to the interpreter, posing tremendous challenges fortheir memory. Moreover, the information can also vary, including names, numbers,technical terminologies and other figures, which are hard to remember by solelyrelying on listening. In this regard, notes function as an external memory which assiststhe oral representation and helps accessing the information quickly and with more ease.

1.2 Efficient note-taking

Since the fluency and accuracy of the delivery heavily rely on how clear and helpful thenotes are, note-taking efficiency is crucial for consecutive interpreting. As previously stated,the main function of notes is that of providing external assistance to the memory, reinforcingand consolidating the message. If so, one might consider that simply writing down theinformation should be sufficient, but in fact, the notes can seriously hinder the interpreter’sperformance, if they are not taken in a strategic manner.

Notes taken in consecutive interpreting should represent the “skeleton structure of thespeech” (Gillies, 2019:9). Ideas and sentences are always based on logical or chronologicalfactors, so the skeleton should be concise and emphasize the logicality of the speech. In thisway, the notes become “a visual representation of your analysis of the source speech” (2019:9).A clear, structural skeleton is what makes note-taking efficient, and efficient noting is whatboosts the quality of the delivery, making sure that the message is rendered correctly,completely, and with a good flow.
