1 Task Description

1.1 Task Background

Tea, as an essential element in China’s traditional culture, has taken an indispensableposition in Chinese people’s life, and it now plays an increasingly important role in the worldas a whole. Besides being the world’s most popular and healthy beverage, its cultural charmabove the physical aspects also begins to attract more people. According to the UN Food andAgriculture Organization, except for water, people drink tea more than any other hot beveragearound the world. The development of material and spiritual civilization has injected newmeaning and vitality into tea culture. At present, all aspects related to tea culture areconstantly innovating, expanding and developing. Over the last few years, tea has experienceda powerful resurgence, not only in the United States and Europe but also in many Asiancountries where ancient traditions are being brought back to life with renewed passion. Sofurther research in different areas relevant to tea culture becomes increasingly in need.However. for a long time, most relevant researches focus on Chinese classics of tea. In fact, tea culture worldwide with diverse features and implications have also provided valuablesources waiting for further appreciating, comprehending, and researching. That is the majorreason why this report chooses the source work on tea culture written by people overseas.

1.2 Introduction to Steep in history: the Art of Tea

Steeped in History: the Art of Tea was compiled by Beatrice Hohenegger, which tells amultifaceted global tales of tea through the combination of eleven essays by foreign scholars. Its’ editor and guest curator Beatrice and eleven art historians have traced the influence of teafrom its origins in China, into Japan, through the “Tea Craze in the West”, up to thepresent-day tea plantations of Assam (northeast of India, the origin of black tea), crossingcontinents and oceans during the process. Beatrice has woven the diverse threads of teahistory into a compelling and coherent story. As a result, this book offers both a historical andsociopolitical insight through tea's past and its Asian origins as well as the American andEuropean influences on its present. This book brings together, for the first time, differentvoices in a cross-cultural approach at the highest level of scholarship to offer a view of theoverall development of tea around the world. It provides an experience, being a purelyaesthetic enjoyment and a learning opportunity, in an effort toward achieving a more balancedperspective in the dialogue between East and West. Obviously, such a book can be served as agood knowledge source for readers to know more about tea culture from an internationalscenario. So far, this book has no Chinese version yet and it is now selected as a source textfor the present translation task.
