The application of the theory of comparative analysis of professional Chinese-English translation teaching in higher vocational English

摘要:The main purpose of the research is to testify whether CAT-based approach is moreeffective in improving students’ translation competence. According to the researchobjective, the author has proposed two hypotheses which have been testified throughteaching experiment, translation tests, questionnaires and interview. After that, all therequired statistics are collected and analyzed by SPSS version 16.0. In this chapter, theauthor will come to a conclusion of the whole thesis. Firstly, the major findings aresummarized. Then pedagogical implications of this study are showed clearly. Lastly, thelimitations of this research are indicated and the suggestions for further studies are putforward.

Chapter One Introduction

 

1.1 Research Background
It is usually considered that learning foreign languages consists of five basic skills:listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation, among which translation competenceis known as the weakest aspect. However, with the development of economy, politics andtechnology, the communication and cooperation between China and other countries hasbecome increasingly extensive. Translation plays an important part in theintercommunication. What’s more, translation is an indispensable technique for foreignlanguage learners; particularly for college English majors, because they will inevitablyface the task of translation after graduation. Some of them may even accept translation as afuture job, which demands a good command of translation competence. More and morequalified translators are needed by the great market, and therefore how to educate a largenumber of high qualified English translators becomes the top task of translation teaching.Although translation teaching has undergone a gradual development in the past fewyears, the current situation of translation teaching in China is not satisfactory. In mostcolleges, most students are not satisfied with current translation teaching. Translationteaching is just about teaching translation theories and skills. The linguistic knowledge ismore stressed than translation competence. Therefore, how to improve students’ translationcompetence under the guidance of translation theory becomes important. Since the 1990s,more and more teachers have realized the importance of translation theory and began toapply some theories and methods to translation teaching. Wang Shaoxing (2002:15) arguesthat “learning translation through translation” means “practice-theory-re-practice”, stickingto the integration of theory with practice. And today, it has been widely accepted thattranslation theory should be applied to translation teaching.Contrastive Analysis Theory is one of the theories and methods in the process oftranslating. By comparing the mother tongue and the target language, learners can find thesimilarities and differences between two languages and then make better translations.What’s more, to some extent, teachers can aware learners’ possible difficulties and problems through the comparison between two languages and know how to improve theirteaching methods.

 

1.2 Research objectives
Translation teaching in vocational colleges has its unique features and purposes. MuLei (1999:88) states that translation teaching in vocational colleges differs a lot  thatof common colleges and universities, which aims at improving students’ ability inbilingual expression and enriching their knowledge. The purpose of translation course is toequip students with basic translation competence instead of training professionaltranslators or interpreters.The author does research on CAT and applies it to English translation teaching forEnglish majors, supposing that CAT-d approach could be one of the good methods toenhance the quality of translation teaching and students’ translation competence andmotivate students’ translation interest. The author’s subjective opinion, however, is merelya simple hypothesis and it is still needed to be testified through a series of teachingprocedures.
