Review on Relevance Theory and Relevance-theoretic TranslationHerber Paul Grice，the Oxford philosopher, proposed four communicativecooperative principles in 1960s. In the four communicative cooperative principles, heindicates that people's daily communication was directed by at least four categories ofmaxims: maxim of manner, maxim of quality, maxim of quantity and maxim ofrelevance (Liao Qiyi, 2004: 252). Relevance theory'sproposition was originally from one of these four principles，with the aim of dealingwith these unsolved problems. Relevance theory enlarged the viewpoint of Grice'scooperative principle and revised the theory concerning relevance.In 1986, Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson published their masterpiece Relevance:Communication and Cognition，from which relevance theory was formally putforward. This important theory to translation directs to the pragmatic aspect oftranslation and gives an insight into the communicative nature of translation. Thusrelevance theory open a new era to pragmatic field and provides a new theoreticalframework for translation. Since it first published in 1986，the book has beentranslated into several languages, such as French, Spanish，Italian, Japanese，Russianand so on.
