Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background
Children’s literature has two implied concepts. Firstly, it must be the literature.Secondly, the target readers are children. Generally speaking, the language of literaturefor children is simple, lively and interesting. And it also has the following features: 1).The characters in the children’s literature have its forceful personality. 2). The plot issingle. 3). The story is fascinating. So when we translate children’s literature work, wehave to bear the features above in mind all the time, because children’s literaturetranslation is children-oriented.However, since translators are adults, it is difficult for them to find the balancebetween adult language and readers. The children’s language is simple, concise andshort, but the adult translators might go astray in the following aspects: they wouldeither forget their reader’s need or make the affectation of ‘childish tone’.Therefore, the problem lies in how to find criteria to solve the above difficulties.So we need a further serious discussion in the research of translation with the guidanceof Zheng Hailing's Harmoniousness Principle. In this thesis, the author classified thefeatures into two aspects in children’s literature after translating several chapters ofDaddy-Long-Legs, written by Jean Webster in 1912. And the useful techniques havebeen accumulated in order to achieve the harmoniousness based on the author’s owntranslation experience.

1.2 Research Significance
This novel is ‘one of the classic world children’s literature’ and ‘ten booksinfluencing my growth’ and ‘a once-in-a-life-time good books’. It has been made intostage plays, films as well as musical comedy. Because of its high population and mypReference, author chooses this book. In the light of this type of translation work, theauthor has taken notes and drawn conclusions which differ from her past experience intranslating the adult literature. During the translation process, the author tried tobecome an invisible narrator between the original text and readers in a childlike tone.Before setting her pen on the paper, the author summarizes the features of children’s literature. By doing so, it could better help the author to meet the demand of childrenreaders. The research is based on the translation of several chapters ofDaddy-Long-Legs, and explained the techniques respectively in lexical level andsentence level of the guidance of Zheng Hailing’s harmoniousness principle. Theauthor hopes that it will improve the translation ability on children’s literature asnatural as possible.

2.1 Studies on Translation of Children's Literature and Daddy-Long-Legs
What is children’s literature? As far as I know, there is no universal answer to thisquestion. In the light of Gote Klingber’s definition, it means “literature written forchildren” (Oittinen, 2000:61) as parts of literature. Namely, children’s literature iswritten by children instead of adult. Hence, it displays the expectation and will of adultfor the purpose of communicating with next generation. As a part of literature,children’s literature has similar features as the adult literature. Therefore, we need tofind what makes the children’s literature different compared with adult literature. Theonly difference is our reader，children.
