Chapter One Introduction
Translation studies have paid more attention on two major trends of translation in the past century. And one is linguistic turn and the other is cultural turn. Moreover, the last century has witnessed that the latter one is becoming more and more popular. As translation works have been published in groups, more scholars have realized that translation is related to the cultural and social background that it belongs to. Due to the description of social and cultural background, thick translation as a new development momentum has been becoming an ordinary issue in the translation circle.
1.1 Research Background
The Return of the Native (1878) is one of Thomas·Hardy’s master works which is called “character and environment” revealing the conflicts between sensibility and environment, personality and circumstance, and it is praised as the masterpiece of English literature. “The Return of the Native presents a departure in the development of Mr. Hardy’s genius…with a deeper perception of the contrast between human passion and natural repose with a more subtle sense of their affinity.” Lawrence, D. H. once wrote about this novel, “What is the great, tragic power in the book? It is Egdon Heath. And who are the real spirits of the Heath? First, Eustacia. Then Clym’s mother, then Wildeve” (Lawrence, D. H. 1936, p. 34). Egdon Heath signs the breaking point of Hardy’s creation career in this novel, since it suspends Hardy’s cheerful and idyllic keynote into tragic tune, from comedy to tragedy. The story in The Return of the Native happened between 1840s and 1850s, which was set in a remote and distant place of England called Egdon Heath. In the novel, Hardy narrated tragic lives in Egdon Heath induced by English capitalism invasion which happened at the end of nineteenth century and through this novel, Hardy explored his distinguished theme on the combination of the environment with the characters. He described the complicated emotions of people, and most of them were lonely. These characters in this novel had a great longing for companionship and love. However, they could not pursue them fortunately; hence Hardy’s presentation of human emotions was universal. Both Darwin’s (1954) The Origin of the Species and Spencer’s (1862) First Principle affected Hardy.

1.2 Significance of the Study
This
thesis takes the English Version of The Return of the Native by Hardy and the translation of The Return of the Native by Zhang Guruo as the research objects. Contrasted with the English version and the Chinese version, the author attempts to find out the reason why the translation is much thicker than the English version through the comparative study in the aspects of strategies of thick translation. Therefore, the author herself chooses the most typical differences which are extracted from these two books as the examples signed with ST and TT for source text and target text as
