1. Introduction
The source text is from the English teaching
Reference book entitled A Course inEnglish Language Teaching, which mainly introduces language and learning,communicative principles and activities, grammar teaching and listening teaching. Thereare about 10000 words in the source text. And there is no published Chinese version ofthis source text up to now. The author of A Course in English Language Teaching is WangQiang, professor of Beijing Normal University. The book is the national projectedteaching material of Eleventh Five-Year Plan used for regular higher education. It won thefirst prize of the national excellent teaching material in national common colleges anduniversities. This book, as the teaching reference book on English teaching, is written forEnglish teachers of middle schools, English majors in teachers colleges. It can also beused as a continuing education course book by English teachers of middle schools andon-the-job training course book of English teachers.This translation is aimed to provide references for high school English teachers andEnglish students of normal colleges to use the teaching reference book more conveniently.The source text is translated based on the perspective of Nord’s Function plus Loyalty. AsNord presents, the translator should know the text function and play a role of coordinatorwho should coordinate the relationships of the translation initiator, source writer and thetarget readers and satisfy their benefits. Therefore, the practical use in translating teachingreference book is chosen as the translation
strategy.
This translation report is divided into four chapters. Part I is a general idea about thetranslation task. Part II gives the translation strategy and its theoretical basis. Part III is thecase study to demonstrate the theme and the last part is the conclusion, making clear thattranslator should realize the communication function of target text in target situation andfocus on the practical use in translating teaching reference texts.

2. Function plus Loyalty and Translation Strategy
Christiane Nord, as the second generation representative of German Functionalism,put forward the Function plus Loyalty approach. In 1970s, German functionalistapproaches appeared. Nord thought highly of them, but she had some different opinions.Because she thought the functional translation theory was not enough to solve sometranslation problems, she introduced the principle of loyalty into the mode offunctionalism to solve problems on radical function in translation. Based on the existingfunctional approaches, the Function plus Loyalty approach was firstly put forward byNord in 1989 in the book of Text Analysis in Translation. (Nord, 1991: 125)
2.1 Function plus Loyalty
Nord’s functional approach stands on two pillars: function plus loyalty. Functionrefers to the factors that make a target text work in the intended way in the target situation.(Nord, 1991:91-109) Nord insisted that target-text should be responsible for thesource-text, whose responsibility is called “Loyalty”. (Nord, 1997: 126) As we all know,every translation text has its own text function. Because of the different functions, thereare also different intended uses for every text.
