Julian Barnes and His Major Works

Together with Martin Amis and Ian McEwan, Julian Barnes (1946—), the ManBooker Prize Winner in 2011, has been praised by many critics as a member of the mostoutstanding writers in contemporary English world. For Merritt Moseley, he is “one ofthe most interesting, challenging figures now writing in English” (17). Up to nowseveral prestigious awards have been given to him, including Prix Femina étranger in1992, Austrian State Prize for European Literature in 2004, the Man Booker Prize in2011, David Cohen British Literature Prize the same year, and French Legion of Honorin 2017. In addition, he has been nominated for the Booker Prize three times.

In 1946, Barnes was born in Leicester, England, whose parents are both Frenchteachers. Greatly influenced by them, he started to show a keen interest in Frenchculture which played a significant role in his writing career that followed. At OxfordUniversity he studied French in Modern Languages Linguistics. Upon graduation, heparticipated in the compilation of The Oxford English Dictionary Supplement. Then hebegan to write comments as journalists for New Critic, New Statesman, Observer and soon. It was in the 1980s that Barnes embarked a new career as a writer.

Barnes was regarded by the British writer Alain de Botton as an innovator in theform of the novel and different language styles are employed in his works with varyingthemes. He follows the experimental tradition of classical modernist writers, andattempts to break the boundaries between the novel and other literary genres. Inaddition, he also focuses on the innovation of the content, whose creation involvesvarious topics as history, memory, identity and truth, and reflects his keen observation and understanding of the social reality. Owing to the fact that the vast majority of hiscreation is concerned with such topics as indeterminacy of truth, unreliability of bothprivate and public memories and the pursuit of truth, he has been labeled as one of therepresentatives of postmodernism and new historicism with a reflection on the livingconditions of people in the post-modern context. As a writer deeply influenced byWestern traditional culture, his humanistic concern permeates almost every novel,combined with unique narrative techniques respectively.

About England, England and Its Literature Review

The year 1998 witnessed Barnes’ sixth fiction, England, England, which hasacquired a great acclaim as a masterpiece of historical fantasy and been shortlisted forthe Booker Prize. It is regarded by Guignery as “a highly original, witty, and ambitiousnovel” (104). Unlike his usual style of writing, he chooses to adhere to the conventionsof novel creation in this book with various themes. In the eyes of certain critics, thisnovel is about “England, authenticity, the search for truth, the invention of tradition, andthe way in which we forget our own history” (Guignery and Roberts 27).
