Peripheral literature in Belgium is an area with limited studies home and abroad.However,it is a country abundant in cultural interactions.Various languages are usedin this area including Dutch,French,and Flemish.The diversity in language leads torich and varied translating activities.Therefore the cultural intersection,Belgium,serves as an ideal case for translation studies.

The source text in this project is an important piece on peripheral literary workswritten by Maud Gonne,a Belgian writer and also a translator.In this project,Gonne’s article--A Latourian Perspective on Cultural Mediators--the Case of GeorgesEekhoud’s Intra-National Activities is translated into Chinese.In the source text,Gonne uses Latour’s theory to explain the literary activities in Belgium.Latour’sActor Network Theory(ANT)is an essential part of sociological studies and alsobecoming all the more important in translation studies.ANT explores how differentactors,human and non-human affect activities,and it is applied by Gonne to analyzethe different factors that have formed the literary activities in her case.

The translator of this report has been introduced to the systems theories in thecourse Introducing Translation Studies and was appealed to the idea of how differentelements in a system affect translating activities,which leads to final translations.This idea has been in accordance with Latour’s theory where he believes variousactors are important in networks.

1.2 Significance of the Report

This project is expected to promote the translation studies in sociology byintroducing ANT.Translation has long been learning from other disciplines likelinguistics and literature.Since the seventies of the twentieth century,translationstudies have been seeking enlightenment from sociology.As one of the mostimportant theory in sociological studies,ANT has gained much attention these years.This project is expected to introduce the ANT to the Chinese readers and furtherpromote the translation studies in sociology.
However,the studies on sociology have been rare and the ones in China inparticular are not even as equivalent according to a report by Chinese scholars.Thisproject will provide a Chinese version of Gonne’s translation study from theperspective of Latour’s Actor Net Work Theory.As the writer is a translator herself,some of her ideas will be helpful in enlightening the translation studies in China.

As the source text involves three different fields,namely translation studies,sociology and literature.Conflicts are present such as interdisciplinary translation,terms being one essential part.The confusion in translating terms has always been upin the air and hopefully this project will also raise the awareness of making termtranslation further standardized.
