Against the background of a community with a shared future for mankind, translation has played a crucial role in cultural exchanges between the East and the West. As Chinese minority literature is an integral part of Chinese literature and culture, its translation has gradually become a general trend. Therefore, the translation of Chinese minority classical literature can firstly promote the cultural soft power of China, secondly diversify the world culture, and change the marginalization of Chinese minority literature overseas.

On the one hand, till now, the translation of minority literature has still remained marginalized as a result of insufficient attention. (Wei Qingguang and Zeng Lu 2017), let alone minority epic, mainly revolving around several ethnical group.

On the other hand, epic translation studies still has attracted some scholars in accordance with its translation practice. Bell (1991) divided translation into two aspects: translation as process and translation as product. The current researches on minority epics translation only focused on a certain aspect of the translation process, such as translation techniques and strategies, translation and transmission. However, few paid attention to the whole process of translation systematically.

1.2 Synopsis of the Study

The questions to be researched, research methodology, and research purposes are presented in this part.

The questions to be researched are: 1）Why did Bender and Aku Wuwu insist returning to Liangshan prefecture to do field research before translating? 2) How did Bender and Aku Wuwu translate the text from Yi language into English through cooperation without Chinese as an intermediate language? 3) How did the translators represent the text features of oral epics in the translation process?

As far as the methodology is concerned, the thesis mainly adopts the qualitative approach with case study as a second. On the one hand, the case study method and text analysis method are used. The research adopts the English version of The Nuosu Book of Origins as the object and makes a detailed analysis from the perspective of cosmographic translation, including making literature review based on previous researches to find its research status quo and research gap. On the other hand, some statistics have been made during writting.

The English version of The Nuosu Book of Origins was firstly published in 2019, but up to now, the relevant studies on it that aims to address the above three questions are far from enough.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Studies on Minority

Epic Translation Epics often refer to long narrative poems that chronicle the heroic feats in the course of a country and a nation’s founding. (Ma Xueliang,1988) In China, minority epic is the umbrella term for of the 55 ethnic minorities’ epic other than that of the dominant ethnic group (Han ethnicity), since the notion of “minority literature” was formally proposed in the mid-1950s before gaining wide recognition and currency.
