Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background

In order to promote Chinese culture internationally,it is imperative that thetranslation and dissemination of Chinese literature be given due attention.In line with thenational strategy of expanding Chinese culture globally,there has been a growing interestin the globalization of Chinese literature within both translation and comparativeliterature studies.It has been recognized by academia that this undertaking entails morethan mere translation,but rather a process of translating a disadvantaged culture into astrong culture(Xie,2014:1).As a result,there has been a recent shift of scholarly focustowards exploring effective modes of translating Chinese literature for internationalaudiences,and towards studying the translation,dissemination,and reception of Chineseliterature in translated form.

As professor Xie noted(2014),due to the language gap and time gap,it’s wiser totranslate a Chinese novel than a classics in a way that can better cater to the tastes andpreferences of the target readers.Xi You Ji is categorized as popular literature and ishighly sought after for translation around the world.The pilgrimage story contains cultural and literary themes that appeal to both Eastern and Western readers.Britishsinologist Arthur Waley translated an abridged version of the novel entitled Monkey in1942,which was widely acclaimed and later included in the Penguin Classics in 1961.The event was a significant milestone because it marked that the translated Chineseliterature was deemed to meet the high standard of Penguin Classics for the first time.Two complete English versions of Xi You Ji were released in the 1980s,whichcomprehensively showcased its literary merit and garnered scholarly attention.This hasled to a noticeable increase in interest in Chinese culture within Western academic circles.


1.2 Research Questions and Methods

Concentrating on exploring the translation,dissemination and reception effects ofMonkey King from the lens of Medio-translatology,this thesis aims to solve the followingquestions:

(1)What variations can be observed between Lovell’s translation and the originalwork?To what extent do these variations exhibit the creative treason nature of literarytranslation?

(2)How does Lovell’s interpretation differ from previous translations and what arethe underlying reasons?

(3)How well has Lovell’s translation been disseminated and received in theEnglish-speaking world and what implications does it provide for the future translationand dissemination of Chinese cultural materials abroad?

To address these concerns,this thesis utilizes a descriptive translation researchapproach to analyze Monkey King,whose translation process,dissemination,andreception will be given further examination.It is worthy to mention that,since digitalhumanities research methods can help overcome the subjective interference andlimitations of traditional translation studies due to small sample sizes(Wang&Shao,2022:117),the translation and communication effects of Monkey King shall be analyzedthrough a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods.That is to say,acorpus-based approach will be applied to measure it论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
