CHAPTER ONETHE IDEAOF METAPHYSICALDETECTIVE FICTION

1.1 TheAnglo-American Tradition of Detective Fiction

We have to begin with the Anglo-American tradition of detective fiction first inorder to know the origin of metaphysical detective fiction genre and its features.

1.1.1ABrief history of Detective Fiction

“At one level, the detective story is the very paradigm of the ‘rattling goodstory’; the reader cannot put the book down (as the saying goes) because of the sheercompulsion to find the explanation of ‘whodunit’. At quite another level, thedetective story enshrines that perennial hermeneutic of the narrative mode whichworks with deep structures of change and stasis, of onward-moving events andretrospective reflection, of mystery and its resolution.” (Chernaik et al. xi-xii)

At the beginning of 1841,theAmerican writer EdgarAllan Poe laid the foundationof modern detective novels with his first novel The Murders in Rue Morgue. Yet, theorigins of detective stories can retrospect much further. Since ancient literature, authorsexpress the persistent pursuit of truth by the theme of crime and punishment. OedipusRex written by Sophocles, set in Greek mythology, is considered one of the forerunnersofmoderndetectives onaccount of Oedipus’s quest forthecriminal whokills his father.Roland Barth once claims “Isn’t every story a form of the Oedipus story? Isn’t allnarrative a search for one’s origins, an expression of one’s encounter with the Law, aninvolvement in the dialectic of tenderness and hate?” (Barthes 36) Oedipus’s quest forhis identity is not only the root of self-reflection but also human’s enthusiasm indiscovering the truth of the world.

1.2 Metaphysical Detective Fiction:A New Form of the Detective Fiction

1.2.1 What is Metaphysical Detective Fiction?

After World War Ⅱ, people saw a diversity of genre in the literary world.Endowing the old formula new depth and subtlety, many sub-genres inherited andsubverted the tradition at the same time.Among them the most notable sub-genres are“the hard-boiled detective fiction”, “the crime and spy stories”, “the police procedural”and “the metaphysical detective fiction”. (Merivale et. al 4-6)As Patricia Merivale andSusan Elizabeth Sweeney defines, the metaphysical detective fiction is a genre thatparodies or subverts traditional detective-story conventions—such asnarrative closure and the detective’s role as the surrogate reader—with the intention, or at least the effect, of asking questions about mysteries ofbeing and knowing which transcend the mere machinations of the mysteryplot. (Merivale et al. 2)

Instead of providing a neat ending in which all the mysteries are solved, themetaphysical detective story raises and concludes with a question, which is doomed tobe unanswerable. The detective, rather than definitively solving the crime problem, finds him/herself confronting the insoluble mysteries. Induced to be an extra-textdetective, the reader also feel frustrated as the protagonist tries to find out the solutionto the riddle together with the same defeated sleuth, whose apparent inability todecipher the mystery (exc论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
