Introduction

As one of the contemporary American female writers, now Annie Proulx (1935一)has received widespread recognition in the whole literature world. She is a late maturity writer. In her short writing career, she has produced four full-length novels include Postcards published in 1992, The Shipping News published in 1993, Accordion Crimes published in 1996, That Old Ace i} the Hole published in 2002. Proulx also has four collections of short stories, which are Heart Songs aced Other Stories published in  1988,  Close Rage:哑omi}g Stories published in 2000, Bad Dirt Stories II published in 2004, and Fire Just
the Way Stories 111 published in 2008.Proulx's first novel wins a prestigious literary prize, which is Postcards earning her the 1993 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. And her second novel The Shipping News wins more honors included a Chicago Tribune's Heartland Award, a National Book Award for Fiction Irish Times International Fiction Prize in 1993 and the most important Pulitzer Prize Fiction in 1994. At the same time, some of her short stories have been selected into the best novels. In the year 2004, Proulx's short story "Brokeback Mountain" is adapted for a film with the same name. Film director Ang Lee wins an Academy Award for Best Director by this film. The success of the film expands the popularity of Annie Proulx. Reading her novels has been a fashion in the world.

Edna Annie Proulx was born on August 22, 1935, in Norwich, Connecticut. Her father George Napoleon Proulx was an immigrant of French-Canadian lineage from Quebec. He left school at fourteen to work as a bobbin boy in the cotton mills of Rhode Island and Connecticut. He was ambitious to work his way up the ladder to become a vice president of a textile mill. The Proulx family often moved to different places in New England and North Carolina because of the father's job. Annie Proulx's mother Lois Nelly Gill Proulx was the descendant of the English immigrant. She was an amateur naturalist and artist. She was good
at telling stories to her children and encouraged them to observe everything around. Annie Proulx was taught to observe the activities of ants, the feeling of fabrics, and the unique parts of people's faces. Days later, Proulx attributed her persistent character to her father and meticulous character to her mother. Annie Proulx didn't have brothers. She lived with her mother and four younger sisters. In such a closed and narrow female environment, Proulx always felt depressed and frustrated. As told to the interviewer in the year 1998:I wish I could have brothers. I prefer the work that only man can do. In my childhood, women were banned from such activities
