Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Research

There are four basic language skills in English learning,namely,listening,reading,speaking and writing.Mastering these four skills is helpful to understand anduse English.In the field of English Education,reading comprehension is not only oneof the most important means for students to obtain new information,but also animportant tool for students to improve their comprehensive ability.It is thus obviousthat reading is one of the most important processes in English teaching and learning.Therefore,it is necessary to apply an efficient English reading teaching method.

Developing quality-oriented education,promoting fairness in education,andcultivating the builders and successors of socialism with comprehensive developmentof morality,intelligence,physical fitness,and beauty are new requirements foreducation in the report of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party ofChina.In 2016,the Ministry of Education established the core competencies ofChinese student development.The core competencies of student development mainlyrefers to the necessary qualities and key abilities that can meet the students’needs oflife-long and social development.One of the concepts of the Compulsory EducationEnglish Curriculum Standards(2011:3)is that education is for all students,andteachers recognize and pay attention to the individual differences in students.

Each student is a unique individual,and different living environments,personalities,and cognitive styles make dissimilar students with various learningcharacteristics.Educators try to apply MIT to be a new idea in teaching,because thetheory focuses more on students’differences and has a profound impact on education.The theory is consistent with the Compulsory Education English CurriculumStandards(2011).MIT believes that every student is unique and has his owncombination of intelligences.Educators take account of the differences betweenindividuals,use diversified classroom activities and teaching methods to ensure thatall students can reach the best level as much as possible and promote the developmentof English learning through different superior intelligences.Organizing teachingactivities according to multiple intelligences can promote the overall and personalitydevelopment of students.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research

MIT focuses on the individual differences of students,emphasizes thediversification of intelligences and lays stress on the development and utilization ofstudents’multiple intelligences.Its application in English teaching has scientificguiding significance for the realization of curriculum goals.It is helpful for teachersto establish a correct view of intelligence,discover different ways of expressingintelligence in students,and use students’intelligence advantages to achieve teachingobjectives.This concept brings about a change in teaching methods,which isconducive to the continuous development of education.This research providespractical cases for other peers who are carrying out junior middle school Englishreading teaching under the new situation of teaching reform.Therefore,the researchhas certain practical significance.
