1.2 Rationale of the Study研究方向
This study is a genre-based comparative analysis on the discursive construction ofauthorial identity in academic writing. As a sub-genre of academic writing, researcharticles (RAs) are considered as an important carrier of scientific knowledge and aImeans of the writers' reputation and status as disciplinary insiders and experts. Genreanalysis of RAs pays close attention to the distinguishing characteristics of theacademic discourse, which include language features significant to RAs, rhetoricalpurposes and stylistic features. The identification of these linguistic features is usefulfor writers to gain insights into generic practices and disciplinary cultures. The effectwould be that writers are able to balance the delicate relationship between shareddisciplinary norms and individual traits in their academic communities.When the rules and conventions are made explicit through genre analysis asdescribed above, contrastive rhetoric could then play its role by comparing andcontrasting genres across two languages and attempting to link their similarities anddifferences to cultural patterns. The importance of the construction of authorial identityhas been attached by English-speaking scholars. Much work has been done to explorehow academic writers manifest their authorial identity to promote the academic status.Compared with English, research has hardly been carried out on Chinese academicwriting.
