A writer can constructthe "discoursal self and the “self as author" by choosing one type of possibilities thatis supported by particular socio-cultural and institutional contexts where he or she iswriting. A writer may choose one among many possibilities to use preferred languageas he or she takes on a particular discoursal identity.Presenting oneself as a particular identity involves making rhetorical choiceswhich meet a particular community's conventions and norms. We can say that thecommunity shapes identity and emphasizes the specific use of language for makingknowledge. Hence, I agree with Canagarajah's (2002) definition of a discoursecommunity as an identity-shaping and knowledge-making community made throughthe use of language in social practices.In academic writing,a writer's sense of identity is critical. Authorial identity canbe realized through language choices. Bourdieu (1991) explained that the language ofauthority is realized through the following resources: rhetorical devices, genres,legitimate styles, authoritative formulations, and good usage. By employing variouslinguistic devices writers can be seen to modulate their propositions and negotiate theinteraction with the readers. The modulation and negotiation in academic writing helpto construct identities in their writing. These identities may project their differentvoices and stance. For example, an academic writer may be a precise scientificresearcher, or a challenging opinion-holder, or a cautious knowledge-maker.The present study is to explore the discursive construction of authorial identity inthe context of academic writing both in English and Chinese. The various linguisticresources manifesting authorial identity are to be investigated to show the generaltendency of academic writers in presenting their identity and authority in their researchcommunities.


1.2 Rationale of the Study研究方向
This study is a genre-based comparative analysis on the discursive construction ofauthorial identity in academic writing. As a sub-genre of academic writing, researcharticles (RAs) are considered as an important carrier of scientific knowledge and aImeans of the writers' reputation and status as disciplinary insiders and experts. Genreanalysis of RAs pays close attention to the distinguishing characteristics of theacademic discourse, which include language features significant to RAs, rhetoricalpurposes and stylistic features. The identification of these linguistic features is usefulfor writers to gain insights into generic practices and disciplinary cultures. The effectwould be that writers are able to balance the delicate relationship between shareddisciplinary norms and individual traits in their academic communities.When the rules and conventions are made explicit through genre analysis asdescribed above, contrastive rhetoric could then play its role by comparing andcontrasting genres across two languages and attempting to link their similarities anddifferences to cultural patterns. The importance of the construction of authorial identityhas been attached by English-speaking scholars. Much work has been done to explorehow academic writers manifest their authorial identity to promote the academic status.Compared with English, research has hardly been carried out on Chinese academicwriting.
