5.1 Representing of Aboriginal Oral Myths in Different Narrative Techniques
Culture is the inexhaustible spiritual power, solid foundation, and fundamentalguarantee of Aboriginal peoples. The myths of Aboriginal peoples are one of thecultures they revere.Oral myths are practices in Aboriginal culture that“sustainscommunities and validates the experiences and epistemologies of Indigenous peoples”(Judy,“Indigenous Storytelling as Research”1).The two novels recreate the culture ofAboriginal peoples with distinct narrative approaches, combining Aboriginal myths andreality, and showing the importance of myths and storytelling to the survival ofAboriginal peoples.
Boyden employs flashbacks and dialogues in his storytelling, while King presentshis storytelling in magical realism form and narration interposed. In Three-Day Road,Boyden represents the Aboriginal story and tradition of“windigo”and“wemistikoshiw”as a way of witnessing and remembering the history of Aboriginalpeoples. In his depiction,he allows engagement with ideas of the past to support thetransformation of the characters(Judy,“Indigenous Storytelling as Research”17).BothNiska and her nephew Xavier were“windigo”killers in their family.Their special status in a way was the driving force and spiritual support for their survival.Byexamining flashbacks and dialogues of the characters,Boyden reconstructs Aboriginalmyths and cultures.
