Chapter Six Conclusion
6.1 Major findings
Here are some major findings based on the analysis of texts, pictures, colors and relationships between pictures and texts, from the perspective of SFG, VG and system of image-text relationship.
First of all, the texts analysis of the 23 SFLs’ web pages reveals that there are only five processes involved. That is, material, verbal, mental, relational and existential process. This study also makes a statistic of the frequency distribution of person pronoun. From Table 4.3 (see section 4.2.2), it can be seen that SFLs mainly present information from the perspective of the first-person pronoun, which helps schools to construct an objective and honest image. Besides, from Table 4.4 (see section4.2.3), it can be found that more than 80% text on the SFL web pages are unmarked theme, which can convey information more directly and objectively, which embodies the reader-friendliness of the web pages.
Secondly, this study analyzes the pictures on the SFL web pages from the perspective of VG. Initially, in terms of the representational meaning of those pictures, there are 117 pictures that are narrative process and only 50 conceptual processes. Because most participants of those pictures are students or teachers, both of which are the actor of a vector, narrative process are more than conceptual process. For this reason, SFLs construct a school image that they are people-oriented and have attached much importance to students and their study. Among 167 pictures, there are many pictures that are taken when obtaining some prizes or win some competitions (see Figure 4.7 in section 4.3.2, Figure 4.18 in section 4.3.3, etc.). From this perspective, SFLs construct an international and multilingual education school image.
As for the interactive meaning, on the one hand, among the pictures on SFL web pages, 54.87% are demanding contact, 45.13% offering contact. Demanding contact means that the participants in the pictures have eye contact with the web page viewers, which shorten the distance between the viewers and the schools. Moreover, from the posture and expression of the participants, readers can experience the great character and confidence of the teachers and students. Furthermore, among those pictures, 47.79% are close-shot, 11.5% medium-shot and 40.71% long-shot, which shorten the distance between viewers and the SFLs, that is, the SFLs.
