Amid the age of burgeoning globalization, many aggressive entrepreneurs have expanded their horizon and are not satisfied with current domestic markets[1][2]. They turn their eyes to lucrative parts in overseas business and want to get a slice in overseas markets. In order to let their services and products gain popularity in different locales, companies need to adapt the services and products to local markets, which gives rise to localization[3]. Besides, the Internet and the World Wide Web have changed the way of communication among people and have enhanced human interaction, which also affords the possibilities of localization[4]. The upsurge of localization kicked off since the late 1970s and early 1980s when software companies like Microsoft wanted to bring their products to other countries[5]. Localization has been supported by technology, and the emergence of new technologies, such as man-machine doubling, termbase management and post-editing system, have pushed forward the development of localization[6][7].
Many scholars and organizations have put forward the definitions of localization. According to Localization Industry Standards Association (LISA), “Localization involves taking a product and making it linguistically and culturally appropriate to the target locale (country/region and language) where it will be used and sold[8].” It is the most popular definition of localization. The definition of localization proposed by Esselink is similar to that of LISA. Esselink[9] argues that localization is the process of “combining language and technology to produce a product that can cross cultural and language barriers” with the goals of gaining profits and enhancing market share in international markets. Dunne[4] puts forward that the definitions of localization tend to be context-related and depend on people who formulate them, which means translators, project managers, company executives, industrial experts, etc. will have different perspectives on localization.
