1.1 Analysis of the Source Text

Text analysis plays a vital role in translation practice. It helps the translator topresuppose and think about proper translation methods while more comprehensivelygrasping the features of the ST.

For one thing, Hapa Girl: A Memoir is a kind of biography text. Based on theresearch of functions of language by Karl Buhler, Katharina Reiss divides the textinto four types including informative text, expressive text, operative text andaudio-medial text (Munday, 2016, p.115). The informative text focuses on providingthe information of the subject, and the expressive text used to convey a kind ofemotion and attitude by the aesthetic dimension of language. The ST is the onebetween informative and expressive types, since it records the real life of the Chaifamily while performing the expressive function of the literature. Obviously, the SThas the characteristics of both informative text and expressive text. Therefore, theauthor should not only transmit the original information faithfully, but take intoaccount the reproduction of its artistic features.

For another thing, the language features of ST can be analyzed from lexis andsentence structure. In the Text Analysis in Translation, Christine Nord presents a modeof translation-oriented text analysis. According to her mode, the lexis and sentencestructure are two main intra-textual factors which are beneficial to text analysis(Munday, 2016, pp.131-133). In terms of the lexis, the original author employs concise and natural language to convey information accurately. And as a kind ofliterature, the language of ST tends to be implicit, passionate and vivid. The authorprefers to use simple words to express different meanings. For example, “Barbarians”,the title of chapter 18, represent different characters including rebellious children andunsuccessful father. And the word “Cannibals” are people who eat the flesh of otherhuman beings according to it conceptual meaning, which is used as the title of chapter20. In fact, it refers to those hens that fights and kills each other. On this occasion, it isa hard nut for the translator to render such words. In addition, the extensive use ofverbs and their inflections portrays the vivid scenes as if the readers witness the wholeevents. In addition, the language is expressive with numerous adjectives andonomatopoeia to create specific atmosphere. In short, it is a challenge for thetranslator to render the lexis of ST accurately and restore its vividness at the sametime.

1.2 Description of the Translation Process

An orderly translation process is the crucial premise of carrying out an effectivetranslation task. It is necessary for a translator to consider the concrete steps forproducing an ideal translation. In his book The Theory and Practice of Translation,Nida proposes a mode of translation process involving four steps, which are analysis,transfer, restructuring and testing (1969, p.33).
