Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Translation Task

The Chinese translation of English academic papers is of great practical significance and academic value, and the research on the translation of English academic texts is helpful to improve the quality of academic translation and enrich the theories of academic translation. In the field of translation studies, the importance of academic translation is self-explanatory, and the exchange and integration of Chinese and Western academics cannot be separated from translation, so the study of academic translation is especially necessary. The author checks domestic and foreign databases such as CNKI, Wan Fang, Science Direct, CEEOL, UCL Discovery, etc. and finds that from 1983 to 2015, academic translation mainly involves the categorization of academic texts, the definition of the concept of academic translation, the necessity, cautions, characteristics (Chen, 2011), the norms, systems (Liu, 2014), principles and ideal models (Wang,&Mu, 2013) of academic translation, etc. From 2016 to the present, academic translation research has shown a trend of refined research, and relevant researchers have explored translation strategies at the persona, usage, abbreviation, text-specific vocabulary, and syntactic levels in academic texts, respectively.

Academic texts contain obscure and difficult terminology, complicated sentence structures, and high requirements for academic norms. In the process of translating academic texts, it is necessary to deal with the difficult issues of academic translation, which include translation of specialized vocabulary, translation of complex sentences, and translation of specific academic sentences. The academic text has a strict structure and strong logic, and frequently uses reporting verbs and hedges to reflect the objectivity and rigor of the academic text, but at present, the academic translation research on reporting verbs and hedges is relatively less, and the academic translation strategies on personal names, abbreviations and syntax are more researched. Since reporting verbs and hedges are closely related to the main idea, style, and viewpoint of academic texts, accurate translation of reporting verbs and hedges can improve the translation quality of academic texts, promote international academic communication and advance the dissemination of academic discourse in China, so this paper is necessary to study the translation countermeasures of reporting verbs and hedges in academic papers. 

1.2 Significance of the Translation Task

The Chinese translation of English academic papers is very informative to Chinese scholars or general readers and is an important way for national people to understand foreign academic views and academic research.

First of all, the study of translation strategies for academic papers can promote the improvement of the translation system of academic translation. Investigating the translation strategies of academic papers can help promote academic exchanges at home and aboard and make academic research results more fruitful.
