Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background

Kazuo Ishiguro (1954- ), a Japanese-born English novelist who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2017, is one of the most influential contemporary writers. Being brought up in English by Japanese parents, Ishiguro is granted a distinct bicultural background which enables him to observe from a different perspective. Ishiguro's rise to prominence as a writer coincided with a climate that emphasized his role as a bicultural author (Wong 2005:11). The situation in which Ishiguro's writing achieved recognition is the new spirit of ethnic and stylistic pluralism that has been broadening the perspective and breadth of the British novel (Bradbury 2001:424). While early reviewers sought to verify his Japanese origin and ground the historical events and locales in his earlier novels in context, he explained that the setting of his earlier writings coincided with his Japanese ancestry. For him, history is just “a piece of orchestration” to bring out his themes (Krider & Ishiguro 1998:150). He prefers to identify himself as an international writer himself because he has no country to speak for (Kenzaburo & Ishiguro 1991:115). As an international writer, Ishiguro’s readership and subject matter are international in scope and content. His writing blends the British with other forms of fiction to produce “an international, late-modern fictional voice” that is broader than any single culture (Bradbury 2001:424). He has mapped out an “aesthetic territory that is all his own” by providing a new representation of consciousness, memory, trauma, and psychology (Wyndham 1995:94).

1.2 Literature Review

Ishiguro gained instant fame after being awarded the Winifred Holtby Prize for his debut novel in 1982. While having inspired many critical responses in England and America since the 1980s, Ishiguro didn’t draw much attention from Chinese scholars until he became a Nobel laureate in 2017. There has been remarkable growth in studies on Kazuo Ishiguro during the last four decades. While scholars abroad pay more attention to the artistic inheritances and creative style in his fiction, scholars at home tend to focus on the themes of identity and ethics in his fiction (Deng & Wang 2018). However, there is still an insufficiency of research on Ishiguro’s later works, especially the examination of his fourth novel due to its obscurity.

Almost as long as his three previous books combined and much more challenging to read, The Unconsoled is acknowledged as a profoundly enigmatic and the most contentious work of Ishiguro. There has been a sharply polarizing effect on readers. While early critics have belittled it as perplexing and tedious, claiming that the novel invented its category of badness (Wood 1995), others have acknowledged its unique contribution to the representation of consciousness (Wyndham 1995). However, this kind of new representation does not lend itself to easy reading. It has inspired researches from different perspectives.
