Chapter One Literature Review

1.1 Research Abroad and at Home

Foreign research on Brown starts early, and the results are abundant. But the research on thenovel still needs further development.A search of the EBSCO website using the keyword“georgemackay brown”,with no restriction on other conditions, yields around 300 relevant articles.Bookreviews account for one-third and academic journal papers for one-tenth of the total.A briefreview of the papers reveals that most journal articles on Brown focus on his poetry and less onhis fiction;most of the topics focus on Orkney and Catholic spirituality, and the study of the ideaof community in his works has been intensifying in recent years.Because there is not a wealth ofscholarly work on Brown(or it is difficult to find it in China),several monographs by foreignscholars are of great value.Such as Alan Norman Bold’s George Mackay Brown(1978),BertholdSchoene’s The Making of Orcadia:Narrative Identity in the Prose Work of George MackayBrown(1995)and Timothy C.Baker’s George Mackay Brown and the Philosophy of Community(2009).Baker’s George Mackay Brown and the Philosophy of Community is a recent andinfluential work.It uses Brown’s work as a primary case study to demonstrate that therelationship between the individual and the community is a main narrative themes in Scottishfiction. He argues that Brown not only occupies an essential place in the Scottish literary traditionbut is also a critical thinker on community.Linden Becket’s George Mackay Brown and theScottish Catholic Imagination(2017)presents how the Catholic faith influences Brown’s writing.Bicket compares Brown’s work in detail with recognised Catholic writers, and reveals thatBrown’s Catholic imagination goes far beyond Orkney’s“little green world”and incorporates theuniversal human experience. Some papers dig into the thoughts of Brown to show his significancein the literary circle, such as Stuart MacBeath’s paper“Under Equality’s Sun:George MackayBrown and socialism from the margins of society”,which states that Brown is a writer with deeppolitical concerns.

1.2 Community with Sociopsychological Attributes

Community is a keyword of modern Western culture, and an essential theme in Brown’snovels. From traditional times to the 21st century, the research of the community has changedfrom emphasizing geographical attributes to sociopsychological and sociocultural attributes.Tönnies is the first to point out that community in traditional societies is naturally formed byshared territory, blood, and the same way of working, and includes three types of community:“Community by blood, indicating primal unity of existence, develops more specifically intocommunity of place, which is expressed first of all as living in close proximity to one another. This in turn becomes community of spirit, working together for the same end and purpose”(Tönnies 27).The members of the community“have a mutual understanding coming naturally”and this shared understanding on which the traditional community relies is a“reciprocal bindingsentiment”,through which, people“remain essentially united despite all separating factors”,butthis understanding is not what we would today call“consensus”,for it is not the product ofdifficult negotiation an论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
