I. Introduction
A. Michael Ondaatje and Anil’s Ghost
Michael Ondaatje (1943—) is a famous contemporary Canadian writer. He is a diverse creator with a strong personal identity. Ondaatje was born in 1943 in the British colony of Ceylon (independent in 1948, renamed Sri Lanka in 1972) and spent ten years of his childhood there. The colonial nature of Sri Lanka is inevitably imprinted in Ondaatje’s memory. His parents divorced when he was seven, and Ondaatje continued to live with his father for four years. At eleven, he boarded a cruise to England to join his mother. At the age of 19, he went to join his brother in Montreal, Canada. He studied English literature at Catholic University, University of Toronto, and Queen’s University successively, and obtained a master’s degree in Literature. After graduation, he joined York University in Toronto, where he taught English literature at Glendon College. In addition, he pursued a career in literary writing. He co-hosted Literary Magazine with his wife Linda Spalding and eventually settled in Canada. As Ondaatje calls himself, his background is a veritable salad mixture, and it’s hard to figure out who he is. Ondaatje’s rich identity is made up not only of his immigrant experiences but also of his mixed ancestry. He is of Sinhala, Tamil, Dutch and other ethnic origins. Ondaatje’s complex cultural identity and the colonial experience rooted in his childhood have laid a deep imprint on his unique writing, laying the foundation for him to become a borderless multi-writer.
B. Literature Review
From 1976 to now, there are eight novels by Michael Ondaatje. However, apart from The English Patient, half of them only attracted little attention. There are not too many studies about Anil’s Ghost. Here are some perspectives of these papers.
Foreign scholars have a relatively diverse research perspective on Anil’s Ghost, mainly focusing on several main themes of the novel, such as identity, human rights, psychology and trauma, political significance and idea of history.
The identity issue is an important theme of this novel. A lot of scholars studied this issue from the aspect of postcolonialism and transnationalism. Victoria Cook’s “Exploring transnational Identity in Ondaatje’s Anil’s Ghost,” explores transnational identities in Ondaatje’s Anil’s Ghost. It reveals the impact of Anil’s identity migration on her life, “identity traverses cultural and national boundaries and encompasses both central and marginal positions”. Pier Paolo analyzes the composite, postcolonial, multicultural and transnational nature of identity prominently emerging in the protagonist Anil Tissera. Sandeep Sanghera constructs Anil’s citizenship by studying Anil’s language of acceptance and abandonment, and believes that Anil’s return allowed her to acquire Sri Lanka citizenship again through learning the Sri Lanka language and Ananda’s touch.
II. Representing and Questioning the Reality of Sri Lankan Civil War
A. Representing: The Cruelty and Violence of Sri Lankan Civil War
In dealing with the relationship between literature and history, Ondaatje is on the same path as the New Historians, and the historicity i本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
