Have you ever experienced loneliness? Undoubtedly, for most people, the answer is, “Yes, I have.” With the irreversible development of modern information technology and the accelerated life rhythm, space-time distance has become closer, but heart-mind distance has become farther, which provides an advantageous condition for loneliness, an insurmountable social problem.

Dying alone or lonely death, a disturbing social problem of aging in Japan, has been spread over the world. Based on the concern of dying alone during the COVID-19 and before, American scholars highlight that loneliness is a problem, and dying alone is regarded as a failure in modern society (Nelson-Becker and Victor, 2020). Since the onset of COVID-19, social contacts of people have been limited, relying much on social media. However, the heart-mind distance cannot be shortened by social media or information technology. The psychological disorders and rising suicide rates resulting from loneliness under the epidemic deserve everyone’s attention. For instance, the COVID-19 has devastated the economy of Japan, exacerbating loneliness from certain social problems, which ultimately drives up an increase in the number of suicides (Shi, 2021). From the above examples, loneliness is becoming increasingly prominent social problems.

As loneliness becomes a more and more severe social problem, the UK (2018) and Japan (2021) have appointed “Minister for Loneliness” to overcome the anxiety and social problems associated with loneliness (Shi, 2021). Meanwhile, plenty of comforting literary works have also been spiritual antidotes and emotional supports for loneliness.

1.2 Research Significance

With the development of the material world, the spiritual world of human beings has been under constant impact, and loneliness, an unavoidable subject throughout human history, has become a more serious threat to the existence of human beings. Fromm believes that the pursuit of freedom produces loneliness, therefore, only to get rid of the predicament of loneliness can we get freedom, and the remedy for loneliness is “love” (Fromm, 1965). The thesis will deeply interpret loneliness, the common confusion and dilemma of human beings, which brings solace to the solitary groups, makes them empathize and understand the inner psychological mechanism of loneliness. Meanwhile, the thesis also allows readers to feel Li’s arguments and cries under loneliness. In the research, the phenomena of loneliness in Li’s short stories and the psychological mechanism of loneliness from the perspective of Fromm’s Neo-Psychoanalysis will be discussed, and the key to getting out the dilemma of loneliness will be explored.

Since Li’s writing career began in 2005 and her works have not been translated into Chinese in bulk, there are only a few studies at home and abroad. The findings of research on paper databases such as CNKI, WANFANG DATA, VIP, and JSTOR, Qroquest show that Li’s works have attracted much attention of scholars both at home and abroad whose research outputs distribute in journals, academic papers, book reviews, newspapers and so on.
