2a Unit description and learning outcomes
The purpose of Language Acquisition is to provide students with an understanding of the relationship between theories of language acquisition, language teaching approaches and methods, and language teaching practice. The major focus is on second language acquisition but significant reference is made to first language acquisition. The subject encourages students to look critically at theories of language acquisition so that they can develop their own considered position on good language.
By the end of the subject students will be familiar with major issues in first and second language acquisition; have developed an understanding of the relationship between theories of language acquisition and the teaching of languages; be aware of ways in which learners of English can be assisted to develop their critical reading skills.
