“Lang Tu Teng” written by Jiang Rong was published in 2004, and soon it is well accepted byChinese readers and causes a big sensation in China. Besides, later it was translated into 38languages and was sold into more than 110 countries. Especially, the English version of“Lang Tu Teng”, Wolf Totem that was translated by Howard Goldblatt is very successfulabroad, especially in America, and it makes a great contribution to the export of Chineseliterary works. As a bestseller all around the word, the “Lang Tu Teng” and Wolf Totem arevery worth studying by translation scholars. In the background of the Chinese CulturalRevolution, Jiang Rong created “Lang Tu Teng”, and the novel is about the Mongoliangrasslands, so inevitably there are a lot of culture-loaded expressions that are related to era,history, and geography in the novel. This is also the important reason that why culture-loadedexpressions are chosen as the research topic of this thesis.

Since the late 1970s, translation study has changed from the previous linguistic levelto the cultural level. Therefore, translators and translation theorists began to consider theinfluence of social and cultural factors on translation. In the beginning of 1900s, AndreLefevere, an American scholar, puts forward Rewriting Theory that emphasizes on the needfor descriptive study, which provides a new direction for translation study against thetraditional thought. Now Rewriting Theory has been applied to explain translated text. InAndre Lefevere’s Rewriting Theory, he emphasizes that the three constrains of RewritingTheory influence the choice of translators’ translation strategies and rewriting methods. Hethinks these influencing elements can be categorized into three aspects: ideology, poetics, andpatronage. Lefevere’s Rewriting Theory provides a good theoretical framework for this thesisto study the translation of Wolf Totem in deal with culture-loaded expressions.

1.2 Research significance

This thesis takes the culture-loaded expressions in the English translation of Wolf Totem asthe objects of study. According the statistics of CNKI, there are many master’s theses on thisnovel, such as aesthetic value, ideological value, ecological value, translation thought, andtranslation style, translation strategy and so on. This thesis finds a new approach to study theculture-loaded expressions in Wolf Totem from the perspective of Rewriting Theory. It hassome significance.

Firstly, it helps target language readers deepen their understanding of culture-loadedexpressions in Wolf Totem.

Secondly, it enables other translators to translate or study culture-loaded expressionsfrom the perspective of Rewriting Theory, so as to further promote and disseminate Chineseculture and carry out the mission of “excellent Chinese culture going out”.
