Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background and Significance

As I Lay Dying tells the story of Anse Bundren,a farmer in America South,who broughthis wife’s corpse to her hometown for burial in order to keep his promise to her.It was afamous novel published in 1930 by the American writer,William Faulkner.This novel wascompleted by different narratives from multiple angles.It was not only a masterpiece ofmodernist stream-of-consciousness,but also a bold attempt by Faulkner himself in literarycreation。

Regarding the literary interpretation of As I Lay Dying,the opinions of different scholarsat home and abroad were very different.The most controversial subjects were Anse Bundrenand Addie Bundren.Some scholars held the view that they were the representatives ofselfishness and debauchery,while others thought that everything could be explained withreasons.In addition,when conducting literary reviews on this novel,the research directions ofdifferent scholars were also quite different.Among them,the exploration of its metaphors andtrauma were particularly important.However,in recent years,a trend of exploring the spatialnarrative of Faulkner’s works has gradually emerged.Therefore,this thesis decides to furtherstudy As I Lay Dying from the new perspective,spatial narrative.

1.2 Research Methodology

What this thesis is going to achieve can be summarized as two section:how tounderstand As I Lay Dying with the help of spatial narrative theory;what space powerimplications can be found in this novel.To be more specific,this thesis is going to re-explainAs I Lay Dying,including its settings,plots and characters,into three different levels(textuallevel,chronotopic level and topographical level)according to Zoran’s spatial narrative theoryand try to give extra meaning into these settings,plots and characters from the perspective ofspace power.Therefore,context analysis will be applied in this thesis.

Context analysis,which is also known as textual analysis,is a method of studyingdocuments in order to examine patterns or implications in literary works(Bryman,2011).It isa quite effective method for critics to explore meanings in literary works and make criticismespecially with the help of certain literature theories and frameworks.Unlike the contentanalysis in the field of business study,it does not require interviews or conversations with achosen group but just“talk”to the literary work itself.In most of the time,critics may applysome literature theories which means reading novels from a certain perspective to see whatnew implications can be implied in it.Due to its convenience for study and combination oftheory and literary works,this thesis is going to apply content analysis as the method ofresearch.

Chapter 2 Theoretical Framework

2.1 General Study of Spatial Narrative:From Narrative to SpatialNarrative
