Chapter One INTRODUCTION
1.1 Research Objectives
The Book of Poetry and Chu Ci are the sources of Chinese realistic and romanticpoetry. The Book of Poetry is the earliest anthology of realistic poems while Chu Cimay be said to be the earliest collection of romantic poems written by poets of thelargest State of Chu along the Blue River or the Yangzi Valley, permeated withtime-hallowed tradition, fantastic imagination and violent emotions of a mythical world. As the beginning of our romantic literary creation, the emergence of Chu Ci in Chinagreatly enriched art expression of literary creation. As the representative of Chu cultureand the originator of Chu Ci,Qu Yuan is an example of Chinese lyrics whose workshave an irreplaceable position in Chinese literary history. His patriotism has had greatinspiration and enlightenment to the later generations for 2,000 years. The aim of spreading Chinese culture to the world is to carry Chinese traditionalculture forward to the world, giving people all over the world a chance to getacquainted with the breadth and extensiveness of it, acquiring wisdom and inspirationfrom it. As one of "running water source" of China's culture, the study of translations ofChu Ci is of vital significance for the dissemination of traditional Chinese culture in theworld.Chu Ci was written over two thousand years ago,so many of the uses of thewords have become much different from their current use and many of the words arequite archaic and become obsolete now, bringing obstacle for the understanding.Meanings conveyed are often implicit and connotative, which are open to diversereadings and multiple interpretations. What's more,Chu Ci is full of images andsymbolization with rich cultural meanings fiill of uncertainties, giving rise to greatdifficulty for translators. This also brings good opportunities for translators to give fullplay to their subjectivities. Many domestic scholars as well as foreign scholars havetried to translate Chu Ci into English, each translation has its own characteristics, forthe translators are different in culture attitude, motivation of translation, aestheticinclination and so on. The thesis tries to study and explore the translator's subjectivityby making a comparative study of two English versions of Chu Ci. The study of thetypical English versions will provide useful reference for English translation of Chineseclassics and will help to the spread of Chu Ci and traditional Chinese culture. So theauthor chooses two versions which are among the most brilliant ones and translated byvery influential and authoritative translators from different countries and diversecultural backgrounds. Thus they serve as good sources for a thorough study.
1.2 Chu Ci and the Poet
In the 4th century BC,a new type of writing—Chu Ci—came into being in the Chukingdom in the Southern part of China. Chu was a big state during the Warring Statesperiod, its people were very fond of music and dances, providing good conditions forthe development of singing and poetry. Chu Ci contains plenty of fairy tales andlegends. It is imbued with splendid imagination.
