1.1 Background and Significance of the Research
In today's world, distances between different nations are getting shorter andshorter due to transportation progress, and the communications between differentcultures are gaining increasingly frequent pace. In the past more than 30 years, Chinahas witnessed tremendous intercultural communications with the rest of the world.Thanks to the reform and opening policy, Chinese people are enjoying a more colorfullife than before, with acceptance of continuous flow of foreign concepts and products.At the same time, the world is now eager to know more about China than ever before.Chinese-English translation is an indispensable tool to introduce China to theoutside world. However, just as Larson (1894) once stated the translation is not only akind of meaning transference form one set of specific symbols to another, but alsoexchanges of social and cultural meanings. It is a link between different cultures.Culture-loaded words directly reflect a nation's history, religious belief, social life andmorality. China, with its long history and far-flung land, has numerous culture-loadedwords. Hence, how to correctly and faithfully translate the culture-loaded words is afocus and difficult point of the translation studies and practice.Lin Yutang (1895-1976) is a famous literary translator in China, and the couplet“two feet covering both eastern and western cultures; one heart tasting articles in theworld，，is the vivid description of his translating practice. His English version of FuSheng Liu Ji (translated into Six Chapters of a Floating Life in English in 1936 by LinYutang) is one of his outstanding translated works. The book has a sea ofculture-loaded words, one of the prominent features of the work, and Lin Yutang'stranslation of them is an effective model to convey their full culture meanings to thewesterners. Foreign readers can have a better understanding of China and its cultureby the faithful translation of culture-loaded words. However, the understanding ofculture-loaded words has always been the obstacle to foreign readers andcross-cultural communication. In a word, it is necessary for us to explore thetranslation of culture-loaded words.Many previous studies have been done on Lin Yutang's translated version of FuSheng Liu JL However,https://www.51lunwen.org/yyfy/org201211121115004281.html most of them done from the perspectives of the translator'ssubjectivity, aesthetics and skopos. And there is no systematic study of the work'sculture-loaded words. In this thesis，the author attempts to make a comprehensivestudy on culture-loaded words in Lin's translated version of Fu Sheng Liu Ji from theperspective of pragmatic translation. It is hoped that this thesis would present a newapproach to the translation practice, and to be more specific, the translation practice ofculture-loaded words.

1.2 Research Questions
This thesis intends to analyze culture-loaded words in Lin Yutang's Englishversion of Fu Sheng Liu Ji from the perspective of pragmatic translation, in order tomake out how pragmatic equivalence works in the translation of culture-loadedwords.Generally speaking, this paper tries to answer the following questions:Ql.
