I. Introduction
 With China’s entry into WTO and playing a more and more important role in international transactions, business communications across the borders are increasing substantially. This current situation stimulates the demand of contract translation as a certain result. English is universally accepted as the international language in business, which means the translation of English contracts is playing a more and more important role in the business community within China and beyond. As we all know that the abeyance and breach of contracts concern the legal responsibility of the two parties, it become more important that the precision and identical legal effect of the translated contract is up to the criteria where both interpretations of the same contract from the two parties consist with each other.
  Translation of English contracts has thus drawn the interests of translators and scholars. The translators are required to produce parallel texts in target language that is identical not only in meaning but also in legal effect with the original contracts. It is under these circumstances that the author of this thesis embarks on the exploration of the theoretical basis and practical measures of contract translation. To develop translation competence, contract translators need instruction in translation theory as well as in translation practice.
With a brief clarification of the basic components of the contracts for panoramic view in the beginning, and a detailed analysis of the features of English contracts in terms of lexicology, grammar, and syntax as grounds of argument, this thesis puts forward several theoretical methods as well as practical skills in translating English contracts, each illustrated with examples obtained in sample contract translation, which may hopefully be helpful in guiding the would-be translators in their contract translating work. 
This thesis falls into three parts: In the first, a brief account about the basic components and the definition of contracts are given to provide for the readers a clear picture of the demands for the translation of contracts. The second part is the analysis of the features of the translation of English contracts in three aspects, namely lexical features, grammatical features and syntactical features; under each aspect several detailed features are included. In the last part, the author put forward several correspondent theoretical methods as well as practical skills including paraphrasing, Dr. Eugene. A. Nida’s functional equivalency theory, literal translation, conversion, accurate selection of modality, vague words for vague words, etc.

 2.1.1 Definition of Contracts
 A contract is a legally binding agreement imposing rights and obligations on the parties which will be enforced by the court.
