Chapter One Literature Review

1.1 Jin Yong and His MartialArts Fictions
Jin Yong (6 February 1924-30 October 2018) , whose birth name is ZhaLiangyong and ancestral city is Hai Ning in Zhejiang province, is a modern martialarts fiction writer, journalism master, political critic and social activist. He isconsidered as “the four talents of Hong Kong”. Among his various identities, he isbest known as one of the finest writers in the martial arts fiction genre for the greatachievements he has made.
During his life, he wrote a total of fifteen fictions, which indeed share greatpopularity among Chinese people. From 1955 to 1972, a time span of sixteen years,Jin Yong created a total of fifteen works of various lengths. Except for the shortfiction Sword of the Yue Maiden(越女剑，1970), he composed a couplet “飞雪连天射白鹿，笑书神侠倚碧鸳” by choosing one character from every title of his otherfourteen works to remember his works. In the order of this couplet, they are: OtherTales of the Flying Fox (飞狐外传,1960-1961), Fox Volant of the Flying Fox (雪山飞狐,1959), A Deadly Secret (连城诀,1963), Demi-gods and Semi-devils (天龙八部,1963-1966), Legends of Condor Heroes (射雕英雄传,1957-1959), SwordswomanRiding West on White Horse (白马啸西风,1961), The Deer and The Cauldron (鹿鼎记,1969-1972), the Smiling Proud Wanderer (笑傲江湖,1967), The Book and theSword ( 书 剑 恩 仇 录 ,1995), The Returns of The Condor Heroes ( 神 雕 侠侣,1959-1961), Ode to Gallantry (侠客行,1965), Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre(倚天屠龙记,1961), Sword Stained with Royal Blood (碧血剑,1956) and Blade-danceof The Two Lovers (鸳鸯刀,1961).

1.2 Translations of Jin Yong’s Fictions and Their ReceptionComparison

It’s often said that where there are Jin Yong’s martial arts fictions, there areChinese. Jin Yong’s fictions have shared unparalleled popularity among the Chineseworld for more than half a century. Also, his works have been translated into manyforeign languages like Vietnamese, Malaysian, Thai, Korean, French, Japanese,English, etc. for the spread of Jin Yong’s works and Chinese culture. What’snoticeable is that twelve of Jin Yong’s works have been translated into Japanese. Inspite of this, his fictions first entered the western world quite late. It’s a pity thatbefore the publication of A Hero Born, the first volume of Legends of Condor HeroesSeries, there were only three full-length English Translations of Jin Yong’s martial artsfictions published in Hong Kong. They are Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain,translated by Olivia Mok and published by the Chinese University of Hong KongPress, The Deer and The Cauldron, translated by John Minford and published byOxford University Press and The Book and the Sword, translated by GrahamEarnshaw and published by Oxford University Press in 2005, which is the latest one.Some studies have been done on these translations. However, during the past thirteenyears, no new English translations have been published.
