2.1 Lack of background knowledge

The biggest problem the reporter encountered in this project was lack of backgroundknowledge.

As discussed by Chinese scholars (鲍刚, 1996), an interpreter ought to be equippedwith certain background information, which may be temporarily remembered withoutin-depth understanding. Without thorough preparation, the reporter’s lack of backgroundinformation caused failures during the interpretation process. In this section, the reporterwill analyze her interpretation problems resulting from incomplete mastery of backgroundknowledge, including unfamiliarity with the speaker’s academic background andunfamiliarity with terminology.

2.1.1 Unfamiliarity with the speaker’s academic background

First, the reporter made mistakes owing to her unfamiliarity with the speaker’s academicbackground.

An interpreter should collect abundant information and messages to ensure accurateinterpretation and the clients’ satisfaction, and thus full preparation before interpretationdeserves huge efforts (Gile, 1995). In this interpreting project, one of the keynote speakersfrequently cited examples from his work and life to offer a better illustration of his topic“A Bakhtinian approach to inter-subjective foreign language education.” He aimed to helpthe audience comprehend his keynote speech thoroughly. The reporter found it difficult tomake smooth and correct interpretation without comprehensive information about thespeaker’s academic background. Here are two examples:

2.2 Insufficient capability in coping with unexpected situations

Apart from lack of background knowledge, insufficient capability in coping withunexpected situations also was a barrier to the reporter in this project. In this section, thereporter will elaborate on her interpreting mistakes in this regard.

As observed by previous studies (Shuttleworth & Cowie, 2014:155), “In simultaneousinterpreting, the interpreter acts as a kind of invisible presence.” Sitting in a booth, simultaneous interpreters work with their microphones and headphones. They listen to SL4,and reformulate it in a TL5speech under huge time pressure. In the process ofsimultaneous interpreting, interpreters may experience unexpected situations when sittingin the booth. For example, when speakers deliver loosely structured impromptu messages,an inexperienced interpreter, like the reporter, might lose logical links in the delivery ofinterpretation. In the simultaneous scenario, the speakers might also suddenly speed uptheir speech for various reasons, which would immediately challenge the reporter’s mentalpower.
